Need to convert a MIDI (.mid) into a Wav or MP3 without it changing how it sounds

My friend converted it for me with some software he has, but it changed the way it sounded. The original sounds like real old midi, with very simple and clear instruments. But when it was converted to MP3 by my friend, it worked ok but the instruments sounded different, almost like they had become synthesisers instead of midi instruments, and it ruined the feel of the song.

Anyone know a way I can do this? There is lots of software that can do this, but I would have to buy it so I don't want to pay for something that will only end up doing the same thing as my friend's software. (His software is called Ease MIDI Converter).

    Thank you.

get him to INCREASE the bit rate of the mp3.

It's prolly far too low. Max it out.

Re: Need to convert a MIDI (.mid) into a Wav or MP3 without it changing how it sounds

ehm... you're asking for something that's completely impossible. think of MIDI as storing a plain text file - the way it sounds (reads) is entirely down to the synth (font) in use. if you use a different synth for playback than the one you use to save a WAV version, then of *course* it will sound different - every synth has its own instrument set, each sounds different

"piano" on one synth sounds very different from "piano" on another. if it sounds good with one but not another, try and make sure your app is using the same synth for encoding as it uses for playback

Re: Need to convert a MIDI (.mid) into a Wav or MP3 without it changing how it sounds

Problem is I have no idea what synths are being used. When I play it, it just uses whatever the default synth is for my Soundblaster Xfi. But when it gets encoded in the converting program, it doesn't let you specify anything besides bit rate etc. (which I had maxed).

Do you think maybe some better converting software would let me specify a synth to encode with? If not, I could play the midi and use a microphone to record it from the speakers, and that would work. But it would no doubt add lots of noise.

You could also use an app that records whatever is going through your sound card. I think there was one called Total Recorder that I've used in the past.

Re: Need to convert a MIDI (.mid) into a Wav or MP3 without it changing how it sounds

    Actually, its very easy...

When you play it back on the computer that it sounds good on, use a sound recorder and record at the same time. Before this, you will need to set the recording sound to stereo mix, way of doing this is VERY different on XP and Vista.

XP - Open Volume Control, Go to File : Advanced / Then find the option to look at recording volumes, then OK the settings and you'll see a set of controls. Click 'Stereo Mix' and then make sure when the Midi is playing the sound meter doesnt hit red or doesn't fall very short, adjust bar accordly.
Then sit back with sound recorder on, record, and play.

Vista - I'm not entirely sure about this cause I haven't done it in a while, there are guides on the internet but it involves viewing unused recording devices, then activating the Stereo Mix in the control panel. Then with that done, your normal output volume will be the same as your WAV file your recording.

To record straight to MP3 or to convert to it, you can use a program such as Goldwave from Goldwave.com (trial is sufficient)

Note : Don't mess around on the computer while its recording or you could cause lag/system sounds to wreck it.

Not a problem my friend please, upload it somewhere for me to hear too

You make midis? I have a problem getting my Midi keyboard to work at low latencies (but its probably just cause I use onboard sound on laptop)

Re: Need to convert a MIDI (.mid) into a Wav or MP3 without it changing how it sounds

I have made the odd midi actually, but this one wasn't one I'd made. This one was from an old game that used midi's, and I am making a Neverwinter Nights 2 module and I wanted to get this song from an old game into the module, so it required being converted to MP3 first Unfortunately you have to jump through all kinds of hoops to actually get it to work in NWN2 hehe. But I will do that sometime.
