    XP32bit 64bit or vista?

Am putting together a new PC and was "looking" at 4GB of ram (dominator stuff).

I am thinking about buying a 64bit OS. I know there was a lot of problems when they were first released with driver issues (i.e. none available), is this still the case?

If not is XP or Vista better? (I have played with Vista and wasn't too keen on it. Propably cause I'm not used to it)

Or is it just worth sticking with my 32bit XP (would be cheaper) and only using/seeing 3GB of the stuff?

The PC will be used for gaming (mainly), converting my DVDs into divx (or whatever) for playing through Xbox Media Center, and maybe a bit of editing from a DV video camera.

All major device manufacturers provide 64bit drivers for Vista. You may have some issue with some 3rd party audio/video codecs that don't have 64bit direct show filters while using Windows Media Center, but that's the only snags really.

    Re: XP32bit 64bit or vista?

well if it's going to be mainly used for gaming.... then for DX10 you need vista.....

so you might aswell get Vista 64 bit, most of the incompatabilities have been ironed out and it's only older hardware (generally) that is still having driver problems, also some vid/audio codecs are having minor problems.

a 32bit OS is limited to using 4GB of RAM throughout the system
for example: if you had 4GB of RAM and a GFXcard with 512mbs of RAM then you would have 3.5GB of RAM available to the system out of the 4GB that was put in...

with 64bit the limit is 16TB (IIRC) so there is plenny 'o room for more addages

the sweet spot for RAM ATM (confirmed by corsair and Bit-Tech) is 4GB which can increase FPS etc...

so my advice would be to get vista64... and 4GB of RAM

    Re: XP32bit 64bit or vista?

I upgraded to Vista 64bit a week ago and Ive been really impressed. Just make sure your hardware is 64 bid compliant (the little things such as wifi dongles that you take for granted). Its a big improvement over the initial Vista release and Im glad ive made the jump. Actually prefeing it to XP already and I thought it would take some time to get used to it. 4gb of RAM obviously helps but thats the whole point of a 64bit OS.

Vista 64, get used to it and you'll stay with it. I do have a tiny XP 32 install that's really cut down with nLite which I use for the very, very few games that won't work udner Vista 64.

    Re: XP32bit 64bit or vista?

I would say "go Vista 64bit".

I've just re-built my PC and moved onto it. As commented previously, pretty much all the original "niggles" have been ironed out. I had been waiting for the 1st service pack to "bed in", usually a reasonable thing to do.

As long as your hardware is up to it, I don't think you will have a problem.

Only bit of hardware I had that did not have 64 bit drivers, was my 5 year old Canon LIDE20 scanner. And as this only cost me £35! I used it as an excuse to buy a new scanner (punted the old one on Ebay for a tenner + P&P).

Upgraded some of my "serious" software (WORKS, NERO, SERIF PAGEPLUS) but again, this was more of an excuse to upgrade my old software (my copy of PAGEPLUS was probably 10 years old!).

No software compatibility problems yet (2 weeks and counting). Any OS change takes a while to get used to, but Vista is pretty easy to tailor (lots of options etc.).

If into games. Then I've had no problems yet. Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts plays great in DX10 and so does Assassin's Creed (as long as you get the latest patch). Even old games appear OK, just installed DOOM3 and playing through it again, the sound in the game still comes over as one of it's greatest assets (still makes me jump at times).

Creative sound card (well at least the drivers for 64 bit) can be a bit of a problem, only got to have a look at Creative's own forum to see that. Though some people appear to have no problems (just like life really). Buy a motherboard with a half decent sound chip like RealTeks HD ALC888 and then you don't need a sound card. It's fine for general stuff and games sound pretty good, I would rate it as better than the Creative Audigy 2 ZS that I had in my previous build.

Vista's User Access Controls are a pain and like I lot of people, it was one of the first things I disabled. Not too keen on having Windows defender forced on me either! Though you can disable the pro-active side of it, a must as I found it clashed with Kaspersky Antivirus.

Other than that I like it.

    Have fun.
    Live long and prosper.

    Re: XP32bit 64bit or vista?

thanks mikeo for your post. I was under the impression that 'nothing' worked on Vista64, but now I think I'll have to re-consider...

Does anyone know if Microsoft Money (latest uk version - 2005 I think) works under Vista64?

i love 64bit vista... running it on my 3gb ram laptop and have played crysis, grid, res evil 4,mass effect, gears etc etc and all really nicely... anything i throw at it it loves
and there was me worrying it would be slower than the previous faulty 4gb laptop i had before...

    Re: XP32bit 64bit or vista?

Yes I know what you mean about the "impression that nothing works in Vista64". Now I'm sure there were some problems in early beta versions, but everything I see and try to run, appears fine (including one application that goes back to Windows 98!). I think this is just one of those myths that has been propagated as time has gone on, probably on the whole by a great deal of people that don't "actually" have any real experience of using it! Just check beforehand that any existing hardware you have, has 64 bit Vista drivers (EG. scanner, printer, gamepad etc.) and download these beforehand.

If you think about it logically, there are very few genuine 64 bit applications, so if the existing 32 bit stuff did not work, then there would not be much anyone could run on Vista 64.

As to Microsoft Money, from a quick GOOGLE (EG. http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/403.aspx ) there appears to be a good chance that it should be OK.

Most Vista certified versions of applications just takes advantage of certain Vista only advantages (EG Serif Pageplus X2 on wards integrates the new Vista Search function).

Only real applications to watch for, are ones that have "hooks" into the Operating System
EG. Antivirus, Anti- malware, CD/DVD burning software (especially the "packet writing software") and I expect there are others.

PS. Looking at my desktop, there are in fact a number of pretty old applications there (EG. exPressit ... CD disk label software) and they are all fine. When loading them, it does warn you that it is temporarily changing the colour palette. But it still works fine. Vista seems to bend over back wards to make sure things run and there is always "compatibility mode". And if you do have problems, then GOOGLE is your best friend.

Thanks mikeo, went for Vista64 in the end and I'm loving it. So far everything works great - no issues with any of the hardware or software...
