First things first; do you have or can you borrow:
1) An external hard disk of sufficient capacity to hold a copy of your hard disk.
2) Your Windows XP CD
3) The ability to download some stuff and burn a CD.
If so, then get hold of UBCD for Windows (yes there's a Linux based version, but you may find the XP-based version easier to get on with). Use something like Raw Copy from the disk tools to copy your data off the internal disk to the external disk. When you've done that, run a chkdsk /f from the CD against your internal disk to make sure the disk itself and the filesystem are OK. Then we can get on to repairing your Windows installation, if it hasn't already been b0rked completely. Unless you've formatted the disk as part of the fresh install, your documents should still be there. You say you attempted to install a fresh copy; at what point did the installation halt, please? Had it already started to delete the old one? If yes, then we'll just have to try installing a fresh copy again post-chkdsk. If not, then we may be able to do a repair installation. Make sure you have your driver disks handy, especially if your machine needs a storage driver to find the hard disk (say, it's a SATA controller). I'm not going to reinvent the wheel here; look at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for the details, and PAY ATTENTION TO THE WARNINGS - read the article all the way through.
