Looking for a freeware FTP client, any suggestions?

    Hi all,

I've been using SmartFTP, but it no longer appears to be free! I'm being prompted to buy it, and as much as I like the program, I think paying for something that serves a relatively simple purpose is a bit of a waste - particularly with the number of freeware alternatives.

So, I downloaded and installed FileZilla. However, it's good but nowhere near as good. I realise it's free so I probably shouldn't expect as much, but FileZilla is really frustrating already. The local and remote navigation windows are horrid, there's no 'up' buttons and getting around folders just seems so awkward.

One of SmartFTP's most useful features, for me, is the ability to right click a file on a remote server and copy its HTTP address. I really need that feature, and FileZilla doesn't have it.

Are there any other free FTP clients that offer features similar to those of SmartFTP?

Can you not just stick to an older version of SmartFTP? That way it wont hassle you.

If you need it, let me know and i can upload it.

Not having used SmartFTP before I'm not sure, but I'll give a +1 to Filezilla.

Edit - ah, that'll learn me to not read the full post before responding

Re: Looking for a freeware FTP client, any suggestions?

I use the FireFTP add-on for Firefox, and that's OK.

edit: It does offer a copy URL feature when you right-click on a file, though you have to have the web server address for that connection filled in under its properties.

Blitzen, that'd be very handy if you could. I've just checked the SmartFTP website and it looks as though it ceased to be free with the introduction of v3. Any version prior to that should do the trick, I think. Thanks!

I'm a fan of FlashFXP personally ..... but though it's hardly expensive, it isn't free.

WinSCP isn't one I'm familiar with, looks interesting. Can anybody who uses it confirm if you can right click on remotely stored files and copy a HTTP address to the clipboard?
