Nobody is going to know what type of system you install it on?
You can use it on any (one) system - so either your laptop, or your PC

Re: question about vista upgrade media

if your first install is OEM, I don't think it'll work as the product key is registered to the one motherboard. You could always pull the old "my mobo died, can i have a new key?" thing and see if it works.

Re: question about vista upgrade media

Upgrade follows the license of your original media. So if your old license is an OEM one (it will be if it came with a laptop) then the upgrade will still be OEM, so only allowed on that machine, even when you upgrade.

If the original license was a Retail one, then it can follow the retail license around when you upgrade/change PC.

In short, just buy a new OEM license. It's cheaper. You can dual-boot that way too if you like.

Re: question about vista upgrade media

In theory yes, providing the PC (read: motherboard) remained the same. Eventually it will call you up and ask you to activate via phone, but it would still be within the terms of the license.

As soon as the motherboard changes (for reasons other than an RMA) then that license is written off.

How would they know that the mobo has been changed? you could just activiate it cant u?

and am guessing windows wont work without activation either?

Short version: A unique key / hash is generated based on your hardware (and probably its serial numbers). When you change the hardware the hash changes, thus reauthorisation is needed

Vista will work properly for 30 days after install without being activated.
