    Re: best antivirus?

general advice is that nod32 is the best antivirus app, but the UI sucks hard. kaspersky is almost as good, with a reasonable UI.

but don't discount some of the other AV apps, especially if you want a value option (nod32 is very expensive compared to, say, f-secure, and not *that* much better)

and the free apps tend to work to varying degrees - but you may find yourself frustrated by the control they intentionally don't give you

    Re: best antivirus?

    Hello directhex,
have you seen the nod32 3.0 gui?
    screenie
i use kaspersky on all my machines
nod32 is a decent av and as shown in the above link the new gui is better. shame that the advanced options tree is like a masssive forest.
f-secure is also a decent av
kaspersky engine+ f-secure in house engines.

    Re: best antivirus?

I'm using avast at the moment and I'm pretty pleased with it, though think I will check out Nod32 as well, given the high regard it seems to be held in around here.

    Re: best antivirus?

I've used Antivir for years, now called Avira. Never had a problem with it, doesn't seem to use too many resources, and it's regularly found stuff other av's don't.

Only gripe is the free version has an ad popup every update for the paid for version. It's a nice reminder the update is working though, so doesn't bother me.

    Re: best antivirus?

I'd say NOD32 if you're going for paid.

I've seen a lot of recommendations for Avast! if you want a free anti virus, but I've never used it myself so I'm not sure if it's good or not.

Currently using Avira AntiVir on my second PC and it's actually running quite well. Using only 9MB memory.

ive found antivir to be really nice except for the big ad that pops up when it updates, but i suppose that's the price you pay for free av

    Re: best antivirus?

The detection rates for AV software doesn't vary that much IMHO. All of those mentioned before work well and detect just about as much viruses as you want. IMHO, my choice tends to lean towards software which gives you control over it, has a small footprint, has frequent but unobtrusive updates (no reboots required). And for that, I've switched to nod32 as well and I'm very happy.

I haven't found the user interface that much of a problem. But Ohhhhh, I can soo sympathise with the "free" versions that lock out features or make things frustratingly difficult to manage. Not that I have any of those problems anymore with nod32. It's not that expensive and gives you peace of mind.

    Re: best antivirus?

I've been using Avira for about a month and it seems to be working great. It's pretty quick and easy to use, and is meant to have great detection rates. I would get Kaspersky but Avira seems to do the job just as well, for free.

You can disable the pop ups if you want - They aren't a big deal to click on but it can be annoying after a while. I found a number of guides by googling and would post the link but my post count isn't high enough yet

    Re: best antivirus?

I can also give a thumbs up for Avira free too. Its very light on the system un-like the other offerings from AVG or Avast. If a free program is used then i would only consider Avira as its faster , lighter and keept up to date very well.

Pay for program , probably Kaspersky 2009 , but NOD32 is excellent.

    Re: best antivirus?

i use Nod32 but it isent cheap. i also use Kaspersky 2007 & 2009 on other machines but sometimes its firewall can be a real pain to set up properly or edit, but at £15 for 3 comp license from scan its the best value by far, if only nod32 was as cheap then it would easily win everytime

AVG is free. cant always argue with free
