Avast - I have been using this for a few years now and it hasnt let me down yet.

Does NOD32 use less system resources than avast?

Hmm that will probably be updates to the actual software itself (which rarely happens). And even then, I'm not sure it restarts. The virus database updates almost daily and it never reboots from that.

As for NOD it used to be the darling of wizkids the world over, and particularly software pirate types (who are most susceptible to viruses and stuff), but I heard that they lost their way recently and that their detection rates are not as good as they used to be, and those same wizkids tend to pick up on things like that very fast and then start shouting about it. I also hated the UI for that one, but it might be better now, it was about a year ago that I used it.

Also, AVG is evidently a bit bloated and also can have a lot of false detections.

I still reckon Avast! is the way to go. Or Kaspersky if you want to buy one. I also remember reading that AOL made a new FREE virus program and they had licensed Kaspersky so it was basically a simplified version of Kaspersky but for free... I'm not sure if that ever worked out or not though.

    Re: best antivirus?

Can I suggest Linux or Mac OS X?

Even when I used Windows, I never bothered with Antivirus software. I think the best way to avoid viruses is to not click banners that say "FREE XXX". Each time I reinstalled Windows, I'd run a Virus scan via Trend Housecall just for laughs, and I never had any viruses (maybe the odd "tracker" cookie, but that's par for the course). I must have been doing something right...

    Re: best antivirus?

It's actually a misconception that you are only likely to get viruses if you are a searching for porn or something shifty. You can actually get viruses from completely innocent things. It depends how much you use the web and how unlucky you are. For example it's even possible (shockingly) to just type an innocent word into google (like Cars or something) and click a link, and get a virus. I've had that happen myself, twice in fact, and my virus program blocked the site. One was as I described, and one was when someone linked a game website for me which has good guides, and when I followed the link it had a virus. I contacted the webmaster and he told me that it was a trojan embedded in one of the ads on their site and he has removed it and will stop using those ads in the future etc.

    Re: best antivirus?

NOD32 is awesome. Mine ran out a few weeks ago and I thought "Hey maybe I should save some money and just live on AVG free".... erm never again! (I wouldn't even say AVG free is bad, its just that NOD32 is just that good - for reasons already specified). Heard kaspersky's good too though, but no first hand experience.
