    XP dieing...(help :P)

Well my compugter crashed yesturday and now when i log on to windows xp everything is very slow and takes like 5mins to load say msn or my computer, after about 10mins it will crash and die. I dont know why its done this but i uninstalled avg 8 free because it was messed up and installed avast anti virus, all was fine for a few reboots but this is really random. Ive tried to back up my hard drive but i cant get anything transfered, i went to format it with the windows disk but ive hit a wall lol, when im show what partitions/hard drives are avalible it only lists 2 (i have 3 hard drive) and one is in accesable(error message),the other one which is my main shows as 131gb partition C, the hard drive was split into 3 partitions which were, C(games)~130gb, D(XP)~20gb, E(data) ~60gb so im stumped as i only want to format the windows part because the rest has the most important information i have, any idea why it only lists 1 partition?

    Thanks guys.

The other partitions not showing is likely due to the OS limitation of 137GB?
You'll get the other partitions back/see them again, after you update to SP2/SP3

    Re: XP dieing...

I would have thought the easiest solution is to download and burn a Linux LiveCD, so you can reformat the drives without Windows interfering. You're going to have to change the drive letter assignments as well, so that your XP partition comes first because Windows (as you've discovered) doesn't like being on a secondary partition. I'd also make it a little larger (25-30Gb) in case the pagefile has gotten squeezed (causing your problems in the first place)

You could try using something like ultimatebootcd. Just download the image and burn to a CD. Go into your BIOS and tell it to boot from CD. Then choose one of the partition managers.

    Ultimatebootcd

This is a free collection of tools and utility’s that helps me out quite a lot.

    Re: XP dieing...

I always keep a copy of Knoppix and DamnSmallLinux (damnsmalllinux.org) around for these situations. There's also an XP slipstreamable version of UltimateBootCD (www.ubcd4win.com)
