Sharepoint Farms - back end replication/clustering

Say a company had 2 sites - each with a Server running MS SQL 2005 for the database and 1 or more Sharepoint servers .
Is it possible to replicate or cluster the back end across a VPN link. An unrelaible one at that. Max throughput is 1.8 MBPS and lowest possible latency is around 160 ms
I dont need to know how it's done - just whether it can be done and whether the enterprise version of SQL server is needed etc.
I am aware we can use a sharepoint front end on a different site to the SQL server, but due to the connection that's not viable.

Re: Sharepoint Farms - back end replication/clustering

you certainly wont be able to cluster with MSCS. ( which only needs a SQL: standard licence , but does need 2003 ent on the OS side )
All of the replication technologies that spring to mind are active / passive so really for DR functionality. ( doubletake etc )

I suppose you could backup / copy restore data that was essentially static , but could be tricky if you had a large content db.

If you had a replicated SAN you might have more chance but it sounds like the bandwidth isn't available for that.
