    Sage for linux?

    is there such a thing?

will it run under WINE with tweakage?

    is there an opensource alternative?

basically i'm trying to convert my sister to linux but hit a bit of a snag when she said that she needs sage...
i got past the main 'but i need this' and 'i want thats' but when it got to sage......

basically i've got a couple of 'pretty' distros (namely elive and sabayon) to try out with her but it's not going to get anywhere if sage is a no no

i've got no idea what sage is like TBH or how dependant on windows resources it is or whether running under WINE is possible (hence the asking )

    so anyone know?

    cheers

Depends largely on the version of Sage, but support seems to vary...
http://appdb.winehq.org/search.php should help once you know the version.

    Re: Sage for linux?

    cheers for that splash

well elive just plain refuses to give any GUI via the livecd at all (no matter how much persuasion)
sabayon on the other hand is great... has options for eeepc and everything
lots of bundled bumf yes... but on the whole a nice livecd to use

but the inclusion of sauerbraten on the livecd has me addicted now

the inclusion of nexuiz aswell :O it's like the OS of lannage

    Re: Sage for linux?

the question is one of task-vs-app.

depending on the tasks to be accomplished, then there may be alternative apps

if there's a major desire for a specific app, then you either need to test out wine yourself, or use a VM as Mob-Disk suggests

    Re: Sage for linux?

I'd have though with something like Sage , unless there is a very very good Open Source clone - then it'll have to be WINE / VM - Beancounters are nothing if not creatures of habit and will get upset if its doesn't look and behave exactly as Sage does.

    you're probably right

but like the people insisting on ms office to write letters to grandma, it's not neccessarily the case that sage is being used because sage is required

I'm not sure about sage interoperability with other accounts packages - its a slightly more complex operation than writing a letter to grandma. If for example you are a freelance book keeper , it would be critical to have software that is 101% compatable with your clients.

only sell something on its benefits - and those benefits need to be tangible for the user in question. what were the benefits, as far as she could tell, of switching OS?

all pretty intangible statements - especially cheaper, given windows is free and comes in torrent form ( but true in a sad number of cases)

you need to be able to relate to specific experiences to help draw the parallels. "safer" means nothing - "remember that time your desktop was filled with popups for farm sex?" is another matter

    Re: Sage for linux?

Personally I agree with your sister.

She is in a commercial environment, how much is her time worth?

Take the cost of windows, devide by her hourly chargable and thata how many hours she has to mess about learning stuff in Linux before it has cost her more that the windows license. Decent antivirus and malware protection isn't expensive either (and in many cases free).

Companies can be incredibly guilty of not thinking about the bigger picture when it comes to IT. If you have an un-reliable and slow PC, in the space of a month that can cost a lot more in lost productivity than the £400 spent on a new base unit or upgrade.

Worth thinking about. There is more to saving money that just not spending cash.
