Hi.
I have windows 2kpro installed on both my brothers and my computers. I want to copy some data files across so i can format/reinstall my computer.
I tried doing this through the LAN, but every time i try i get an error saying 'Could not copy *file name*: The specificed network name is no longer availible.'
They are on the same workgroup etc, i can see/ping his computer fine. Just cant copy across it.
Any ideas?

how they connected? Crossover or hub/switch?
You got accounts/permissions setup on both machines?
Crossover - both fresh installs of win2k. Both using Administrator log on to connect - i havent set anything else up...
Are you mapping a network drive or just copying to \\machinename\sharename ?
Mapping a drive is generally far faster than using UNC's though im doubtful as to whether its this thats causing your problem.
It could be a duplex mis match - try setting both network cards in both PC's to 100Mbit Half Duplex assumign your running 100mbit NIC's. (right click network neighbourhood, properties, right click the network connection, properties, click configure button under your network card, goto Advanced tab, look for speed / duplex settings box click ok and unplug the network cable then plug it back in after youve done it on both PC's)
Failing that - could just be a dodgy xover cable.

Adminstrator accounts have the same password?
I'll second Butuz's idea about forcing the duplex setting to half duplex. Though I would have thought you should be able to do full duplex with 2 PCs connected via a crossover cable...
I have been using the cable fine with no problems for 6 months. And there are no passwords on the Administrator things....less hassle for me :)
