Firefox seems to want to use my favourites as "auto complete" urls

    Why?

Surely, with having my favourites in the My Bookmarks box, and with an easy to access Bookmarks Shortut bar along the top....

surely I dont need those to be auto completed when I type a URL in?

What do I do to stop it? because I cant find an option for it. I like autocomplete to autocomplete things I'm typing, but not things that I have not types but are in my Bookmarks....cos I'd just use my bookmarks....no?

This is a function of FF3's new "Awesome Bar" - I like it myself, but does attract mixed feelings with many people finding it distinctly less than awesome.

You can disable the autocompletion of stored bookmarks by going into about:config, find the entry browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped and change the value from "false" to "true." Restart Firefox and you're done.

Re: Firefox seems to want to use my favourites as "auto complete" urls

hmm i like it, i've especially made a folder called 'lazy bookmarks' so that when i start typing an url it'll auto complete and can keep wipe the history without incurring any effort of re-typing familiar urls

I can't work out whether I like the awesome bar or not.

Thing is, sometimes it's spot on, others it's annoying.

I think the 'classic' way is better, because it's more predictable.

But I'll stick with it for now.

its one of those things that just takes a little getting used to, but its obviously much 'better' than the old way, because in fewer keystrokes you've got access to more. That's progress!

Its just like the start menu thing in Vista, the more you learn how to use it, the better it is. If you've ever looked at old people, and woundered how they where able to miss out on the great things like the internet, then this is exactly how. You get stuck in your old ways so much you can't see the greatness through the damn stuck in your rut mentality.

Re: Firefox seems to want to use my favourites as "auto complete" urls

I've found a really easy fix:

    1. Unistall FF3
    2. Install FF2
    3. Enjoy

For someone who types 'f', [down arrow], [enter] and expects to wind up at forums.hexus.net the FF2 style make browsing much faster.

Re: Firefox seems to want to use my favourites as "auto complete" urls

If you want rid of it as I do then the following will get rid of it:

    1. Type about:config in the address bar
    2. Search for browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped
    3. Click on it so the value changes to True
    4. Close firefox and reopen it and the "awesome bar" will be gone for good.
    5. When reopened, clear out the history etc and the bar will not show the drop down list that's no use at all.

    the awesome bar is awesome.

it means you get access to your favourites and history (and that means <title> not just urls) in one place. can't remember which site had an interesting product review? type in the wawesome bar, and it's there. got a lot of favourites across multiple sections? awesome bar again.

Problem is, people know what to expect from the address bar. When you change its behaviour, even if it is to make it clever, and don't make that behavioural change abundantly clear, many people will reject it.

The idea behind the Awesome Bar is that it provides a "one stop" quick search facility for *all* the information retained by the browser - and (at least in theory) it should intelligently present the results on a "frecency" (combination of frequency and recency) basis.

If you have many hundreds or even thousands of favourites/favorites/bookmarks or whatever you want to call them, it can be difficult to keep them in order, or to quickly find what you're looking for in a complicated menu heirarchy. Being able to type in a couple of keywords and have the results appear instantly is a far more efficient way of doing things in that situation - previous users of the now sadly defunct Powermarks will know what I mean.

There's no denying it's a different way of doing things, and it's not to everyone's taste - I do think if you persevere with it though, you'll grow to appreciate it. There's certainly no need to regress to FF2 as someone suggested above, when it's so easily disabled if you really can't stand it.

Re: Firefox seems to want to use my favourites as "auto complete" urls

It's a bit like Vista's all-in-one search on the Start Menu, and IE8 comes with an 'Awesomebar' like feature too.

Personally I never use my bookmarks to get to a site unless it's one I don't visit often (bookmarks being more for archiving sites than for frequently used sites for me). I tend to start typing the first few characters of an address, either in the address/awesome bar or even in a Google window, so it's perfect for me. I can fully appreciate that it's not for everyone though, and if I stick FF3 on the work PCs, that feature will be disabled, at least for now.

Unless changes have been made in the last so you can go to the old way, disabling means disabling the entire history. It's not as easy to make FF3 behave like you want it to.
