    Shut Down = Restart.

    Hi all,

I just installed a Plextor CD-RW (52x24x52) in my Mum’s computer. The Operating System is Windows 2000.

The problem is that when "shut down" is selected from the drop down menu the computer simply restarts instead of turning off. I tried in Safe Mode and selecting "shut down" works fine, so I think this means the problem is software related.

    Thanks in advance.

check that automatic rebooting on stop errors is turned off (system control pannel/advanced/startup & recovery), i've seen similar when the "shutdown" command sends a bsod right before powering down, causing it to reboot

If that's right then surely you'll just get a BSOD and have to turn it off manually. Try uninstalling any new software you installed since the upgrade. You might lso want to try taking the drive out completely. If worse comes to worse, you might want to completely reformat.

Not if windows is set to reboot automatically on errors.

Yes, but directhex mentioned turning off the automatic reboot - either way you can't shut down your PC properly.

But it will make it easier to work out just what is causing the crash, making it easier to fix.

Right cheers, I’ll try that setting and let you know. Geez, I certainly do not want to have to format my mum’s hard drive and reinstall all the rubbish on there again.
