    Checking the Leccy

I'm a pretty keen folder - currently standing at 12th in the Hexus table. I run the GPU2 client and my brother's PS3 when he's not about and leave them running for as long as I can: over-night, when I'm at work and when using the pc for anything except gaming. That's how I get such a good score, see? Dedication is the key...

Then my electricity bill came through today and I'm very unhappy - it's gone up by about 40% and I've got to start making cut backs. I think that the folding's going to have to be the first thing to go

Is anyone else facing a similar dilemma? I can't help wondering if folding in general will see a decline as people start trying to shorten their rapidly expanding power bills.

I can't even imagine what Lowe's quarterly figure looks like... plenty of 0's I guess!

    Re: Checking the Leccy

Once I get my new quad box built and my HTPCs up and running again i'm going to see what kind of output I can get in a weeks worth of folding. I won't be doing that full time though.

    I'll have 10 cores and 3GPUs spread over 4 boxes. (C2D laptop, 2x AM2 HTPCs with 780G chipsets, C2Q with Quardro 290).

It would appear that work computers are the way forward. Anyone know the best present to buy your SysAdmin to get Administrator privileges?

    TakTak, that is sheer brilliance!

Only thing is that I've just remembered that I'm going to have to try and send such a cake to Bangalore, India. Yay Globalism...

    Pretty much the same here

The kill-a-watt meter was rocketing when folding was loaded. Over the period of a month the difference in electricity usage was quite a bit

Gutted as I enjoy the concept.

    Re: Checking the Leccy

On my C2D I never noticed much (if any) of an increase in my electric bill, how things will go with this quad now I don't know, but then I don't fold 24/7 and have only my computer running it (have my sisters and mothers ones running as well, but doubt they are on 24/7 either)

    Get a job in IT

Get your department to buy Lexar JumpDrives because they let you use encrypted storage. Then when you try and use it they'll realise you need admin rights to use the encryption software on the pendrive.

    Re: Checking the Leccy

I'm getting about 50,000 points each week now, but most of that comes from the Xeon's in 3 of our Macs at work. I cron the Mac Intel SMP client to start at 6pm with the oneunit option and they're usually finished just after our morning stand-up meeting and cup of tea. Might be able to bring 2 or 3 more on line later this month

At home I run the GPU2 client on a G80 8800GTS 320, because it's way more energy efficient than running the Intel SMP client. It runs in the evening and into the night on cheaper electricity. However I'm thinking about upgrading to a HD4870 and considering getting an old 8800GT 256 or 9600GSO on Ebay to run as a separate folding card.

If you're seriously thinking about a lot of folding, and don't want to give even more money to the energy companies, then see if you can get a cheaper tariff and read about Economy 7 if you don't already have it - http://www.uswitch.com/energy/economy7.html
