Ubuntu Linux - Every time I use it....

.... it shows me how fantastic it is!

This will go for any GNU/Linux distro.

I just scrapped an old system with a full Ubuntu install that I use on my desktop. As a little bit of a show off I have a few nice bits installed I didn't fancy reinstalling it all. So as a test I grabbed a new PC, pulled the hard drive out, installed the "old" hdd from the scrapped PC and booted.

It booted right to ubuntu, i logged in, fiddled with the garphics card drivers for a bit and bingo its all up and running with no issues.

Amazing, I didn't even need to reinstall a single thing and it picked up the soundcard drivers without me having to even click a single button.

Impressed.... again by all and any GNU/Linux distro

This is hardly exclusive to youuuubuuunnntttwwwooo. Practically every Linux distro boots on arbitrary machines of the same architecture type.

I was also very impressed with ubuntu all the way from 6.06 (not too long ago i know) hehe,
Now i use it as my main operating system and it always puts a big smile on my face everytime i hear the start up sequence
I know its not exclusive to ubuntu but its the first linux distro that made me say 'wow'

It's also the first linux distro that made me barf. Especially when buntards talk about how awesome their distro is, when they are really talking about every distro out there.

I agree, but as long as you don't end up with rediculous misconceptions like Linux == Ubuntu.

Re: Ubuntu Linux - Every time I use it....

well I also use / have used OpenSuse, Redhat Ent, Mandrake and Knopix as well as Ubuntu I understnd that Linux does not just = Ubuntu but I have to say that I am most impressed with Ubuntu at the moment.

I have no idea why you are being a little hostile I was just saying I was impressed that I could move my hdd for an AMD 939 system to a P4 system and not have to do anything at all to it. Unlike Windows.

Re: Ubuntu Linux - Every time I use it....

You attributed the move success to Ubuntu, when Ubuntu had nothing to do with it beyond the fact that it's just the distro you had installed on the HDD.

Well the fact that I have never tried this with any other distro means I didn't want to say anything other than the facts I had at hand at that time.

I wish I had just kept it to myself now.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy it worked well for you. I just wanted to clarify that this is typical of the Linux kernel and GNU userspace software in general, and not Ubuntu voodoo. Or more bluntly, I'd rather credit be given where credit is due.

Well I would guess if Ubuntu didn't exist there would be ~30% less linux users... So who deserves credit for linux's increased popularity?

Dell bundling Ubuntu with the entry level machines helped to increase its public profile too...

How about the Debian developers, the folk who developed the PMS and packages that Ubuntu uses, or maybe the Linux kernel developers, or maybe the GNU developers, who develop the base software, or the countless other developers who provide the software which distros use. All distros do is provide a selection of software and a preconfigured state it's installed as.

Dell could have picked any number of Linux distros. They struck a deal with cannocial. That's all there is to it, it doesn't make Ubuntu special.

Re: Ubuntu Linux - Every time I use it....

    It's like this:

The work that's gone into linux over the past few years is astounding, lots of great progress made.

Ubuntu has taken that progress and packaged it up into an excellent operating system.

It doesn't matter how good GNU/Linux software is if there isn't a 'product' that delivers it well. And Ubuntu is, for many, that product.

So yes, credit to the contributors to GNU/Linux, but also major props to Canonical for its work.

If we need a single distro to trumpet as "the" Linux for the desktop, then so be it. However, with Xandros and others cropping up in shipping hardware, that doesn't appear to be necessary anyway.

Acknowledging the success of Ubuntu is, by extension, acknowledging the hard work of the Linux community in general. Taking offence to Ubuntu getting all the credit just sounds like fanboyism to me.

And the reason those of us who've used various distros say the latest one we're using is better than the rest... because we have a friggin' choice. If Red Had was a PITA when we last used it, why would we use it again when there are 200 others to choose from? Doesn't matter if it's got better, or is just as good now as the thing we're using; we have the luxury of choice, so we make the most of it.

    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();
