    Vista 64bit & 4gb Install

Once the remaining parts arrive I will be installing Vista Premium 64bit SP1 on a new machine with 2x2gb RAM.

Can I just add the 4gb to the PC and Install the OS? Or do I have to install only 2gb RAM, install Vista 64 then download a fix and install the other 2gb?

I've read about the 4gb problem but don't know if its still an issue

    thanks

Stick all 4gb in and see if it works, never had any bother with mine with all 4gb in

As long as you're installing with SP1 integrated then you won't have an issue. If you're not (like me), then I remove one stick, install Vista, install the fix and add the stick.

There shouldn't be any real problems as far as I can see. Stick them all in and test it out would be your best bet.

same advice here. SP1 should have the fix for the 4gb ram issue. you can of course try to install 4gb if SP1 isn't integrated and see how that fairs. to save time and effort just keep the case open till it all works

    Re: Vista 64bit & 4gb Install

    Hi Maccer101 ,

As the others have mentioned place the full 4GB memory in the PC and give it a try. If it does not work then revert to only 2Gb.

You may need to install the OS , then adjust the BIOS after.

I had similar problem with my OCZ Quad 8GB ( 4x 2GB ) set of memory. Would not work at all with anything other than 2GB installed. ? ?
The fix was the BIOS , and changing the timings as well as the voltage too.

System defaulted it to 6-6-6-18 @ 1.8V. For some reason only 2GB would work like this.

    8GB successfully worked @ 5-4-4-18 @ 2.1V ... so happy now.

Hope this helps in some way.

    Regards

    McT

    Re: Vista 64bit & 4gb Install

The OS doesn't care about the changing amount of RAM but the BIOS motherboard can be an issue, might have to slacken timings.

there is a problem with vista installs that stops it installing if there is (i think) 2 RAM modules inserted at the time of installation (sorry for being a bit vague.. i've never actually looked into it TBH i just know it's there...)

Its anything over 2gig, regardless of number of sticks.
It was fixed soon after launch, but if you have a non SP1 disk it can be blinking annoying if you don't know about it.

As above, with a SP1 disk this is not an issue

Never realised there was an issue with Vista 64 and 4GB of memory. Since day one of installing Vista 64 I never had a problem with the 4GB of ram I had in my machine. Guess I was lucky

Certain conditions need to be met for a problem

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777/en-us

    • The computer uses more than 3 GB of RAM.
    • The computer uses a storage system that is running the Storport miniport driver.
    • The computer uses a controller that uses 32-bit direct memory access (DMA)
