Grub screen resolution in ubuntu 8.04 (amd64)

My abit board uses a resoluion of 720x400 for the bios and grub is also using it ( as it was the last resolution used)
I have changed the monitor from the install maonitor to a 15" LCD TV that will not display 700x400
I can live without the bios being shown but would like to see the grub screen
Is there a way to change the default resolution of grub ?

Re: Grub screen resolution in ubuntu 8.04 (amd64)

I don't use Ubuntu, however GRUB is not an intrinsic part of Linux - it is just a bootloader, so when the GRUB scrreen shows, Ubuntu isn't running - neither is the X system graphics server.

The grub output is a graphical output, but outputs to the screen through the graphics card in its basic mode.

You need to change the basic parameters of the graphics card to something that your TV will display. How you do that will depend on the graphics card and/or the bios - so you will need the monitor you installed it on. Most graphics cards default to the VGA standard of 640x480 and most monitors/LCD TVS should work at that resolution.

Re: Grub screen resolution in ubuntu 8.04 (amd64)

640x480 the lcd tv does work with this res

the board is an ABIT A-S78H with onboard (ATI 3200)

the first boot screen is 640x480 then it goes to 720x400 and grub uses this i was hoping there was a way to force it to 640x480 ( dual boot with windows )

very strange - grub's menu should only be capable of running at 640x480

Re: Grub screen resolution in ubuntu 8.04 (amd64)

can you force the TV to remain at 640 by 480? (I wonder if it is reporting back its optimum resolution to the graphics card, and the graphics card dowesn't support that?)

Re: Grub screen resolution in ubuntu 8.04 (amd64)

It works fine on a 15" monitor ( the one i used to install it) but on my daughters 15" LCD TV it will not display 720 x 400

    edit 720 x400 not 700x400

the TV is at fault but the abit board goes to 720x400 for the bios and dos

That screen grab is showing a 70Hz refresh rate - not many LCD TV's will support this. Worth checking

Agreed thats why it will not show on my daughters LCDTV
the dos screen prior to this is using a 720x400 ( same for bios screen )
I think grub is just run from the previous screen

Re: Grub screen resolution in ubuntu 8.04 (amd64)

Noyt sure where you are running DOS - what is the dos screen? (You couldn't run DOS until after GRUB has executed - although I suppose you could use GRUB to boot to DOS....)

Grub seems to be using the default resolution of the graphics system, you need to change that, and as it is an embedded graphics system, it comes back to the bios.

It isn't until you have a full blown operating system up and running that you can start loading drivers to change the graphics refresh rate and resolution etc.
