    Which backup software

What I basically have is 2 x 250GB data drives. These will be backed up onto a single 500GB drive. I will have 2 of these 500GB drives and use then turn about as latest backup. They are in a caddy, one in at any given time, so removable. I will be running Vista Home Premium 64. What I would like to be able to do is schedule full backups, incremental backups etc ie when say backup disk 1 inserted, backup disk 2 removed, disk 1 brings itself up to date there and then.

    Thanks

Acronis is a superb program to get. Well respected by many.

Cobian backup is excellent, and free, just type cobian into google (or your fav search engine).

Have been using it for years on my home network (5+ pcs), works a charm.

Acronis is good, I've used it for years but it's worth pointing out you won't get any sensible replies if you ask for tech help and it also doesn't support RAID 0 installs.

Other than that it's saved my bacon a few times

IIRC you can use it for (software) Raid 0 installs; with limitations. You can just get 2 individual images of the raid drives but to get the data, you have to restore those 2 images onto another raid 0 setup. Real (i.e. expensive not-onboard) hardware raid 0 obviously works, because it's transparent to software and Acronis.

Hey, thanks for that, I hadn't thought of doing two seperate backups.

Acronis has no trouble backing up a RAID 0 setup, it just won't restore the backup to a RAID 0 array, it sees two disks. It will of course restore that RAID 0 setup to a single disk.

So maybe if it's possible to backup each disk seperately as you say, then restore each image to two disks, that would work. Hmmm

    Re: Which backup software

At the risk of being one of the crowd, acronis 11 is even better than previous versions and well worth the upgrade. It's simple and easy to use.

    Re: Which backup software

+ 1 more vote for Acronis. Although i had a few issues with v11 not being able to restore verified images so i went back to v10.

    Re: Which backup software

Noticed there is 2009 version now of Acronis Home. Still lists no support for GUID (GPT) partition table.

So is there any benefit getting 2009? As I've not used any backup software I can't tell if the improvements warrant the price difference between Home 11 vs Home 2009.
