    Issues with vista

I have a number of problems with vista, I have been using it since release day and have these problems occurring on both computers I have run it on and am struggling to find the cause or a cure. The first is that when i open the recycle bin, i am unable to use the button which says "empty recycle bin". Whilst I can still close the window and right click the icon on my desktop to empty it, its quite annoying as I often have to open it first to see whats inside and then close it to empty it. When I click on the button, nothing happens. In the case of the second, some of the links in the start meu don't work. By this i mean those of the most commonly used applications. Its quie frustrating to see the application i wish to use and then realise i have to navigate to it the long way round. Both problems aren't serious (I hope) but a just rather annoying. What could a solution be?

I had this issue both on a Dell Dimension 9150 and on my new rig (which can be viewed by near my username). Thanks a lot for any help on this problem, its been annoying me for a while but I never was able to get it sorted out. Thanks again.

Also, in the recylce bin, the button next to it, restore all items, works fine.

    Re: Issues with vista

I know this dosent help, but a colleague of mine wanted Vista on his 9150. I couldnt get it to work properly for him. In the end he just went back to XP. There is probably something about the Dell that is not quite normal. Just thought I'd add to the statistics for the Dell 9150.

    Re: Issues with vista

If it's not too much trouble, I would suggest reinstalling it from scratch too. I have installed Vista on about 4 different PC's now, and it's always quick and painless, as is using it. You can back up your bookmarks and if you can back up your software onto another hard disk or a writeable CD/DVD, then all you need to do is format and reinstall and it should be fine.

All my software I own on DVD or CD, and the things I don't have on disk I can just copy to another drive for backup, so doing a fresh install is pretty painless.

    Re: Issues with vista

The issue is that i have had this on two computers, the dell and my new one, which is a

    CPU: Intel Q6600 @ ~ 3.0GHz
    Motherboard: Asus P5-Q (iP45)
    RAM: Corsair 4GB DDR2-800 @815 MHz
    Storage: 120gb USB +160gb (SATA II) +320gb(SATA II)=600GB
    Graphics card(s): ATI HD4850
    PSU: Seasonic S12 II 500w
    Case: Antec Nine Hundred
    OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit

which is far from a dell. Re-installing would be quite inconvenient as i just did a fresh install in Late July, when i built the new comp.

but you use the same key for x86 as x64.. you just need x64 installation media, and you can just borrow someones copy as you pay for the key not the discs...

so if you have 4gb then you may aswell install x64 and have the full amount addressable

32bit has a limit of 4gb of addressable space... thats for everything... so if you had a 512mb gfx card you would have 3.5gb addressable ram (well..you would have less due to various other chips..)

whereas 64bit has a limit of 16tb (iirc) of addressable space.. so plenny 'o room

I agree. But maybe the OP hasn't / can't get a copy? I have 4 gig on my Vista 32bit.

Unfortunately, I chose Vista for my work PC and I've not been too impressed with its performance and (in)stability. I'll see if I can reproduce the issues you're having when I go in tomorrow.

well... it gives you more addressable space...

say you sli'd 2 1gb cards on a 32bit system with 4gb of ram... you would see less than 2gb...

but if you use a 64bit os you can use it all

That's around two years and it's gone through a lot of changes in that time. Anyone who has used complex software that has had masses of patches (like an MMORPG for example) knows that sometimes it picks up quirks that cease to exist after a fresh install.
