What is actually the point of Vista?

So I've been using vista now for 9 months. My system is slower, less limited and a pain generally to use over Xp...

I am an average home user who plays games and uses the internet for all sorts...

Direct x 10 games ... what games..... will there actually be more than 10?

So what else does vista actually do better than xp or faster?

    Is there anything?

I have a new hard drive and I am wondering shall I put xp 64 back on instead of vista 64?

XP64 is pointless. Hardly any driver support and loads of applications broke on it.

If it is a choice between the two, stick to Vista 64bit.

I've just built a quad core box with 8GB ram and vista 64bit. It's great! Vista on my laptop was sluggish and a pin in the ass, this PC is pretty sweet. Now going to see what difference I can make to my laptop by re-installing it without any Asus crud included.

Re: What is actually the point of Vista?

Have a look for my thread around here.

I prefer Vista as an OS by far - more secure, more eye candy (bad reason? sure - but shoot apple fans first please), better Media Centre, better resilience against driver issues..ect..
But having said that, I never really encountered many issues on XP, certainly not after SP2.

But I have to agree, its slow. Slow as a dog on my system and a reinstall has never helped. I like you struggle to find one thing Vista does faster than XP (okay, searching is faster )

I will actually be doing some tests soon on a few apps across multiple OS's and see if its just in my head, or if it really is much slower than XP.

Actually, XP64 is no where near as bad as people think. Although I wouldn't recommend it for anyone but the enthusiast.

Driver support isn't that bad with the big brand companys, so as long as its not anything obscure you should be ok. I wouldn't count on updates though.

As for applications being broke - Since a lot are using .NET now, this becomes less of a problem. To be fair to XP64, I didn't come across any application problems.

Re: What is actually the point of Vista?

Well I was running Vista Ultimate SP1 evalutaion on my PC around a month ago, and it was much more smoother and stable then XP! So i decided to buy Home Premium recently, installed it two days ago and it feels sluggish for some reason not exactly sure why, but im planning to strip vista down with vlite and do a reinstall. I like Vista though, it has grown on me

Re: What is actually the point of Vista?

I'm quite happy with Home Premium now it's SP1. There is no noticable difference between it and XP really, on my laptop that is.

As an easy example, time how long it takes to open something like Photoshop (or any decent, commonly used application) on Vista and then on XP. Chances are you'll be surprised which is the faster, and not by a short amount of time either*.

    * Providing Vista has actually been installed for more than a few days and that you use the program in question.

Re: What is actually the point of Vista?

Not sure if that answers the OP's question though - what is the point of Vista? Its really a marketing exersise.
Sure, now its pretty good, stable, looks nice, but doesn't often anything significant as a reason to move away from XP. Its not a significant upgrade, and for many people the hassle of having to reinstall an OS and then all your apps is just too much.
This is the value proposition that many businesses have to look at, which is why many are still running Windows 2000 - there is considerable cost in upgrading, so there needs to be a good reason.

If Microsoft hadn't done such a good job (eventually) of making XP reliable, many more would jump to Vista.

    Just my 2p.

Used for unattended installs with all your normal settings/drivers on the disk and slipstreaming service packs and updates etc.

Re: What is actually the point of Vista?

I got to say that it annoyed me that I needed a duel boot (vista/XP) to get Crysis playing at a decent framerate, and even more so that you can't get DX10 on XP. I can't help thinking that it's just a con to get gamers to upgrade, though I do prefer the vista interface.

    Spot on, lol

I run Vista Home Premium on one system, I like it, I like the Media Centre, it runs fine, I have no issues whatsoever with it except....... it won't run some older games like TOCA Race Driver 3, but that's always been the case with changing MS OS's..... and.... yes, in some areas it is slower, most notably when clicking on a hard drive other than the primary it takes a good five seconds sometimes to show all the contents.

But all in all, I like it.

I just hope their next effort is better.

XP lasted seven years and is still popular. You might reflect that with XP Microsoft almost got something right.

Re: What is actually the point of Vista?

I think its easer to answer with some of XPs short comings.

The security model was completely void in an out of the box setup, everything running as super user isn't good.

It's 7 years old, it was never designed for half of the hardware we now take as standard. My work box has issues when the /3gb switch is used on 32bit mode obviously. I think this is due to drivers, but haven't been able to point the finger conclusively at ati. There are many little issues like this.

The other point is that API advances have been made (more than simply directx10!) these often take a couple of years for the developers to fully embrase, but also for the userbase to grow.

Vista is actually a damn fine OS thats been slated by many press, i got banned from another forum for complaining that someone who was (illegally?) reviewing the first beta of Vista, was criticising the installer, completely ignoring the technical notes, which clearly stated this was a BETA and the installer was still just the off the shelf one.... And that was a large UK enthusiast reviewing website. Making a total bunch of judgements which weren't even included in the finished artical.... Moronic!
