    Audio Utility for Vista?

    Hi, i have a Creative SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit internal PCi card for sound, however, on purchasing my new headphones and speakers, the sound seems to have just a bit too much treble and just a little bit too less bass. Is there any utility i can download that woud let me fiddle with these things? Thanks.

    It's built into Vista:

    Start->control panel->hardware and sound->sound

    Under playback, click on the active speakers you are using to select them and then click properties

    Under Tone, change the treble and bass as you like

    This doesnt work for me as i dont have any tone options. All i have are the tabs of general, supported formats, levels or advanced, with none of them allowing me to alter tone, bass or treble.

    Re: Audio Utility for Vista?

    Its actually upto the drivers to provide the enhancements for things like that, becuase you don't really want to have to do the maths in software. (thou plenty of media players can).

    The problem is creative don't really give a whoot about driver support, you might in fact have better luck with an outside community effort like: http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/

    problem is, you don't really have any comback for system instability etc.

    Personally i'd avoid this problem by not using creative products. I started this back when my dual PIII 933mhz box had such issues with the creative drivers not actually supporting more than one processor properly, it would just stutter etc.

    Ah sorry - yes you have a live! product which means creative hate you It is possible to use hacked XFI drivers (i think) which may be your only hope. TheAnimus is right - they're drivers are crap (I have an XFI sadly).

    Re: Audio Utility for Vista?

    I was thinking of upgrading to an xfi actually, a while ago but I was worried as to how long a life the x-fi products still have. When were they introduced and when do you think the next brand of products from creative would com out, or better yet, which sound card would be a btter option? Thanks.

    If I were buying a card now i'd probably go for something from the Asus Xonar range. Probably the D1.

    The Asus Xonar is basically the same chipset as the Auzentech X-Meridian, b-Enspirer, Claro and the Razer Barracuda, the CMedia 8788. Most use the same reference drivers from CMedia and driver support is pretty much none-existant.

    I've got the Razer Barracuda and after two years they've finally released some x64 drivers for Vista, and they're just terrible. Features like Dolby Digital Live/DTS Connect work but there's no upmixing, so its pointless, making the card in effect no better than onboard sound, feature wise. For a £100 sound card, its just disgusting.

    Hopefully Asus provide some better drivers, but in my experience the only decent sound driver support in Vista is for onboard sound, which lacks the same performance/feature set of a dedicated sound card

    I'd read the drivers were good and all the reviews seem pretty positive about the hardware too?
