    Virtualdub and video rotation

    Hello All,

wifey has recently used our camera to take some videos, but managed to turn the camera on its side - hence the AVIs produced are sideways. I googled a bit and eventually came (back) to Virtualdub.

I can use this to open the AVI, apply a rotate filter then save again. The video comes out the correct orientation, but for example, the 16MB file saved as a 183MB one... so not ideal.

After searching some more, this was down to no compression being used... However, even playing with all the encoders on my system, I wasnt happy with the size/quality ratio.

Is there a way where I can just rotate the video orientation but keep the video quality etc the same, like with a direct stream copy???

    All you virtualdub experts... Help!!!

    Thanks

    JP

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

With AVI files, you will need to ccompletely re-compress the video for the rotation to take effect, there is no way to copy the data rotated, video compression doesn't work like that

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

that's the case for ALL video codecs. you can't just rotate it without decompressing every frame, aplpying a transform, and compressing the new frame

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

true for all codecs, but as for container formats, MOV might be able to do this. I know i've set a MOV to display at 200% and saved it without having to re-encode the footage, you can also embed further mutimedia functions in a MOV file, so it is feasable that you could rotate the video stream within the container.

There is also a Windows Media container that can have interactive content, so it might be possible in that. Or Matroska....

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

    On a similar note (again with virtual dub);

I am trying to use it to make a suitable avatar for forums. I use pre-made gifs and trying to resize them using virtualdub. My problem is how do I go about reducing the file size? For example I have a gif whose original dimensions are 400*249 and weighs in at 209kb. I use virtual dub to resize the file to 120*75 and the file size is 153kb. I used gifworks website and got a file 35kb in size.

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

Thanks for the replies - that makes more sense - if i have the time to experiment then i will try different codecs and quality settings, but its only a few. Just going to have to educate the wifey!!!

I had no idea you could use VDub to create animated gifs. Gifworks could be creating a gif with a smaller colour pallet (32 vs 256 colours for example). OR it could just be way better at identifying where it can alter the frames to get better compression.

Nor did I till I had a talk with moogle a few weeks back. Guess I'll keep prodding around the virtualdub to find an answer.

I compared the gifworks gif and the vdub version and the gifworks one is very grainy. vdub version looked really good.

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

Sounds like the Gifworks version is reducing the colour pallet and dithering to reduce the file size.

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

Use Sony Vegas 8 Pro - get the trial version and try it out for 15 days - www.sonycreativesoftware.com

it has the facility to rotate video (unlike the other NLEs) for street signage, portrait displays etc. Is NOT the same as rotating a video clip, which any program can do.
One can never stop saying Thank You

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

But once you export that to a standard video type, it will open, decode, rotate then re-encode the footage.

You can also do this in Adobe Premier and After Effects.

    Re: Virtualdub and video rotation

as for the video rotating, i've had a similar problem, me being an idiot was recording a video on my mobile and had to change the orientation to fit the scene.
my solution was to use a great little open source program call mediacoder.
install and then configure your required codec, or possibly just copy the audio and video stream (tip: using the provided plugins are quite useful rather than plenty of trial and error to get the correct settings)
in the picture tab, select rotation and select the rotation you require.

hope it works out for you
