Itunes deleted all the music off computer when updating! any ways to get it back?

My friend updated her version of iTunes and it somehow managed to delete all the music files from her computer. the iPod itself is no longer recognised by the iTunes as sync'd with that computer and a messege come up saying some thing like ' the iPod plugged in is sync'd with another computers iTunes, would you like to wipe and sync with this version'.

she rang up Apple about it and all they had to say was that this sometimes happens and that there may be a way to get the music off of the ipod back onto the computer but would not tell her how for some sort of reason.

is there any way that anybody knows of how to get her music back, as its a big pain in the backside!

    Thanks guys

Brilliant thanks for your quick reply Shaithis, and your right Apple should supply something like that insted of just having the attitude of ' oh well it happens'!

.....but before i go and tell my friend to pay for that does any1 else kno of any other options, and we can use Anapod explorer as a last resort!

Re: Itunes deleted all the music off computer when updating! any ways to get it back?

Th eIpod should mount as an ordinary disc which you can find in windows explorer. The music will be in one of those folders.

    Thats the good news.

The bad news is that the titles are meaningless as Itunes (and tyhe ipod) use a database system to store the files, and uses the embeeded tags to display the track name and other details when the track is played.

So first off is to copy the music folders onto a hard drive on the computer, then put the ipod away. This is so that you still have the original files to work with if it all goes wrong.

Having copied the tracks to a drive, you can then try importing those tracks into itunes. No gurantees, and I don't have a step by step guide tto do it - I'm just giving you ideas!

If you do import the tracks into itunes, you can then resync the ipod - and if that that point it all goes wrong, you still have the copied folder so you can restore everything back to the ipod.

Media Monkey or Foobar2000 (with the Foopod plugin) will both do what you want; no faffing, will show you what msic is on the iPod and just copy the music you want back to any PC - simple and free

Plenty of apps to do this now, including WinAMP and Songbird, but i have only used Media Monkey and Foobar myself.

I always have a copy of iDump and Yamipod (both free) on the ipod itself. They're single file executables so I can run from the pod to copy -> PC or just listen to my music on the host computer without having to transfer across, handy for using at a friends house.
