    Linux Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition, How to Recover or Reset Admin account pass...

    Linux Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition, How to Recover or Reset Admin account pass...

    Hi,
    One month ago installed Linux Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition on my PC (also has WinXP PRO dual boot on another HD partition)
    I created 3 Linux accounts:
    Admin (Administrator)
    alx (With Full Administrator rights)
    user (No administrator rights)

    The problem is that I have forgotten the password of the Admin & alx accounts and I can only login as user, thus I cannot install any drivers or make modifications in the O/S.

    Please if there is any way to reset or recover at least the Admin password, it will be greatly appreciated!
    Otherwise I'll just have to re-install it again which would be a great pity since I had setup the O/S very nicely.

    Any help will be highly appreciated
    Thanks in advance.

    At bootup you should be able to choose recovery mode, which I think will give you root. From there you can change passwords I would have thought.

    Indeed: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Think Steve is correct. Ubuntu is a debian based distro, so doing a google search on recovering passwords on a debian system might help.

    In Fedora you can boot to single user mode, which drops you straight into root which allows you to reset the password.

    Alternatively you could boot from a live CD and delete the passwords and shadow passwords files - but you need to know how and where Ubuntu stores those files.

    Just done a quick search - this link looks useful
