Photoshop help: Adding a 'lightning' layer to a photo

Hi, i have a slightly old photoshop installed (can't remember version but around 3 years old), plus GIMP (if that helps anyone).

I'm looking to add a lightning effect to come out of someone's fingers, a la Emperor Palpatine
Problem is, i'm a little lost how to do it and before i trawl through pages of online help i wanted to ask here...

I have my original photo (a baby), and have got some lightning photos from google, which i have very loosely outlined to cut away the unwanted crap. What now...? My memory tells me it's something to do with chroma keys or something.

    Thanks in advance

realistic lightning is a pain in the backside without a specialist plugin - it's possible, bit it's very time consuming..

The cheat's way is to use something like Xenofex 2's electrify filter: http://www.alienskin.com/xenofex/index.aspx (the lightning one isn't as good), the filter package isn't too bad - $130

The other way is to ask someone with the filter to give you a psd with the transparent layer
