Windows Server 2008 Standard for day to day use

So there are some reports that this is much faster than Vista, even with the eye candy turned on...

So is it a good idea to use this instead of Vista? Anyone tried it?

Btw you can get it free here (if you are a student )

I use it in work for our terminal servers, its ok but I would just use Vista to be honest.

Re: Windows Server 2008 Standard for day to day use

I've heard of a couple of people who are using it as their desktop OS and they really rated it over Vista. (They were on a forum I was on, I don't go there very often now.)

Any problems with running an antivirus on it etc? That's traditionally the sticking point in using a server OS for desktop uses.

you will need enterprise AV I think. Last time I tried to install desktop AV on a server platform it told me it could not be installed.

Re: Windows Server 2008 Standard for day to day use

    Does it allow DirectX/Direct3D acceleration?

Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1 or greater (possibly the non-R2 release as well), DirectX and Direct3D acceleration are disabled in the OS. No way to turn them on apart from a fairly complicated slim-streaming hack available for SP1 but nothing at all for SP2 that I have found.

Would be a show-stopper if it's been disabled and if it is available, I would feel very apprehensive about installing any service packs because they may just disable it again.

Re: Windows Server 2008 Standard for day to day use

server 2008 does make a good destkop OS but i only found one or two av's that where decent price. f-prot is like $30 for 5 users. thats like £15 and can be insalled on desktops and server OS. or you can get nod32 business license £91 for 5 licenses. i had some issues with f-prot when i tryed it when i breifly installed server 2003 in dualboot config.
works well but you need to use some workarounds to get everything working but its possible and of course pricing for security software isnt good. neither is backup software.
paragon drive backup 9.0 pro wouldnt allow me to backup due to having a server OS on my hard drive so i had to get rid of server 2003 unfornatly. btw at the time dreamspark only had server 2003 offered for free and not server 2008. so im gonna download server 2008 now.

Re: Windows Server 2008 Standard for day to day use

Im using server 2008 every day....aslthough as servers not a desktop OS. Its stable mable...it doesnt crash!

Its also worth looking at the HyperV role in server 2008....if you have compatible hardware you could utilise it to run some virtual machines.....vista from a server 2008 hyperV 64bit, may well be faster than vista 32Bit standalone!!

    lol no they weren't...
i used to run 2003 all you had to do was run dxdialog or whatever it was called and enable it as by default it was set to software rendering etc for crap low spec machines. you had a the directx options you had in xp... cause i used to use 2003 server for gaming lol as when i was a student i had a free copy and i found it like people say faster than the current choice of os (which was xp back then)

I know about those options and probably 3 more your unaware of that can effect Directx/3D functionality.......I spent around 30 hours trying to troubleshoot this before coming to this conclusion, which I have now found Microsoft engineers confirm on the Microsoft forums.

Of course, your happy to post a screenshot showing 2003 R2 SP2 with the options in DXDiag not greyed-out......

Re: Windows Server 2008 Standard for day to day use

Server 2003 definitely allowed Direct3D acceleration to be enabled just through DXDiag (and perhaps the graphics advanced settings too), as I did it myself. 2003 R2 SPx might have changed that though.
