    Re: Linux Fedora

    just a quick question.
i have heard that linux eg open suse does not pick up viruses from the internet.
What if by accident you downloaded a virus, for example the "ups email virus" what would it do? Would it just sit on your harddrive? Is this the same with spyware?

Also is it safe to use it for internet banking, becuase if anything did happen, the bank's first response would be "did you have antivirus and anti-spyware installed?"

    thanks

    Re: Linux Fedora

There are no active Linux viruses in the wild, and I've never heard of anything you'd call spyware per se - a bigger problem is getting attacked ("rooted") where an attacker gains access to your machine via an insecure password or unresolved security problem. This is a problem which only affects you if your machine is not hidden behind a router of some sort.

I run about 300 Linux machines, and none run (or would even consider running) an anti-virus app. The internet-facing ones *DO* scan for rootkits though.

If you're that concerned, look at http://www.avg.com/download-7?prd=avl or http://www.f-secure.com/products/fsavcsl.html or somesuch - but they're really used almost exclusively for removing windows viruses from email or file severs

    thanks for the info,
but i have just tried using opensuse, it seems that it doesnt have it in version 11 but only in the beta 11.1

Would this firmware work when using the live cd. Becuase i cannot seem to find the folder. it seems totally empty in the opensuse gnome edition. I am pretty determined to get this up and running, and i am very interested in learning about linux.

Would you need to install it fully to get access to the folders.

    thanks

/lib/firmware is the "standard" place for it, but different distros may have different defaults. I'm afraid I can't give more advice than that - I just know where it is for me.

As to whether you could do it with a livecd, depends on the livecd - if the disc uses technology like "AuFS" or "UnionFS" to allow you to install extra things (into RAM) whilst the disc is running, then yes
