Remote Desktop from Vista Home Premium to XP Pro?

As thread title hints at is it possible to Remote Desktop from Vista Home Premium to XP Pro? Going to be building a Vista PC sometime soon. I will keep my current desktop as it still has its non-gaming uses.

I've been told that I can access Remote Desktop in Vista Home Premium to control my XP Pro PC. Is this true or do I need Vista Ultimate which I know has Remote Desktop?

Re: Remote Desktop from Vista Home Premium to XP Pro?

For Vista Home Premium 32bit use this:

    http://www.unet.fi/fransblog/wp-cont...ermsrv_sp1.zip

Steps to Add Remote Desktop to Vista Home Premium:

    1. Download termsrv.zip (above)
    2. Extract Termsrv.zip to a temp directory
    3. Start “Command Prompt” in Administrator mode (Run As Administrator)
    4. Run the corresponding batch file for your Vista edition
    5. Allow TCP Port 3389 on Windows Firewall or any other firewall product.
    6. Done

...however, that's to allow you to do it from XP Pro->Vista HP. If you just want to remote desktop from Vista HP to XP Pro them all you need is:

    Start->All Programs->Accessories->Remote Desktop Connection

The client part (to connect to another machine) comes will (i think) all versions of Vista or can be freely downloaded.

Not bothered about XP Pro to Vista HP. When I build the new PC I will only be interested in RDing from Vista HP so I'm happy that Vista HP has the RDC stuff.

Re: Remote Desktop from Vista Home Premium to XP Pro?

Just another quick question on this topic.

Does the PC that I will connect to need to have a keyboard and mouse connected? Or can I just have it connected to my network and not need it to have its own keyboard and mouse?

Just have the one keyboard and mouse on my new PC.

You don't need a keyboard and mouse on the target machine - I connect to the media centre downstairs daily that only had them attached for install purposes.
Would be a bit crazy otherwise

just little curious here: will this increace the risk of being hacked, i mean it opens port 3389 which is bit dangerous

No matter what software it is, if its listening to a port and interacting with data then its a surface area for attack.

Having said that, I don't believe there has been an exploit to bypass the login of remote desktop yet?

A fully patched system with a secure password should be fine.

I am behind a nice hardware router and switch. Linksys AM200 + WRT54GL. Anything I can do to keep port 3389 open to local requests only? Or am I not really at risk?

Re: Remote Desktop from Vista Home Premium to XP Pro?

xp pro is a valid rdp server.
You just have to configure it to allow connections.

From vista run mstsc.exe (doesn't matter which version of xp you have, it is standard)
It's only the rdp server that is limited to business and ultimate editions

If your router is the access point to the internet, then you can simply just configure the firewall to only allow 3389 traffic on the lan and block all wan
