    Vista partitions

Finally having decided on my Vista setup I would like to partition Disk 0 as follows.

40GB set aside for Vista ie C:

    the remainder as D:

It is a 160GB (149GB after format) drive. All I seem to be able to do is shrink the volume by a maximum of 50% from 152625MB to 76257MB making C:much too large.

How can I get C: to be more like my required figure of 40GB?

    Thanks

The most reliable way is to re-install windows and define the partitions correctly during the setup procedure. I'm guessing the reason why you can't shrink your C: drive any further in Windows is because there is data written to that portion of the disk, perhaps a defrag may help - make sure you run one that consolidates data to the edge of the disk.

Alternatively, there is specialist partitioning software you could use, like partition magic, you have to pay but you may be able to find a trial version of a similar app. somewhere for one-off usage.

I don't remember getting any partioning options when loading Vista like I used to with XP. It just went and installed it on Disk 0 all of which it called C:

There should be an advanced menu somewhere when installing that gives you all the options unless you have somekind of slip stream version of Windows.

No idea what you mean by slip stream. Just got Vista Home Premium 64 bit from Scan.

    Re: Vista partitions

Slip-stream is when you create you own version of the setup disk (based on the original) in order to integrate the latest patches and hotfixes etc. At the same time you can also configure defaults for 'silent' install so you don't need to interact with the install process. It's used mainly in business.

As for your original problem, have a look at this guide, specifically point 10:
