    OS's and memory...

right, just wondering what the maximum amount of memory OS's use, or rather, are able to access; I recall something like XP and programs running on it top out at 4gb so more is not really needed as its not used - is this correct? similarly what how does vista, Mac OSX and Linux compare?
just thinking about upgrading/updating what I use at the mo, currently run xp and 2gb, and can get max 4gb on my current set up but what with all the photos I edit ram usage is high(!) so wondering what would be a sound move in order to get and use more for these sorts of things...

    Re: OS's and memory...

a 32bit OS has a maximum addressable memory of 4GB, that memory is for everything... RAM, VRAM the whole shabang, everything... all the little fiddly things aswell..... so if for example you had 4GB of RAM in your computer and a 1GB GFX card, then the OS would show <3GB of RAM...

a 64bit OS on the other hand has a maximum addressable of 16TB... which is more than enough at this moment in time...

so basically to make use of 4GB of RAM you need a 64bit operating system (such as vista home premium 64, etc)

    Re: OS's and memory...

there are subtleties to it though. fr'example, "PAE" is a dodgy hack allowing 32-bit OSes (on compatible motherboards) to address more than that - whilst still restricted to 2GB per app

generally speaking, just think of it as 4GB for all 32-bit oses, terabytes for 64-bit, and leave it at that

And suitable processors for Physical Adress Extensions

Not all the old 32 bit ones supported it

Plus untold numbers of linux distros, yes. Though Ultimate isn't the only version of Vista available in 64 bit.

    Nope.

Most (if not all) *nix releases have 64bit versions

    EDIT: I type slow

The WINE AppDB is your friend. As I'm not sure which version of PS you run I didn't want to link directly to one.

Almost. If the app is large address aware, and the /3gb switch is used (or IncreaseUserVa for Vista) - cos then it's possible to use 3gb per app
