Re: Compressing AVI files?
there are loads of transcoding apps out there. loads. but you'll be lucky if you can keep quality high when going losst -> lossy
Re: Compressing AVI files?
only need to drop a few meg, but cant find the program to do it. I dont want to have to miss a file as they all run 1 after each other
Re: Compressing AVI files?
DVD Shrink doesn't do avi files,So in that case what i normally do is use the program ConvertXtoDvd3 which will convert to dvd vob then use shrink.Hope ive helped.
If you use convertx it should take about a hour to convert:)

Re: Compressing AVI files?
Is it an AVI you have downloaded or one you have made yourself? Most ISO's come at around 4.7GB but they will burn to a 4.4GB dvd. You dont need to extract these first.

Might mess up with FF3 though not sure if they've ironed it out.

The man speaks the truth. It's not free, but it's not expensive, and it's very, very good.
Re: Compressing AVI files?
Auto Gordian Knot (known as AGK).
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/autogk.htm
Although originally designed for DVD compression, it works perfectly with AVI -> AVI
It's free, really quite easy, and you can batch run a load of files if you need overnight. :)
Re: Compressing AVI files?
No need to compress the AVIs again then re-encode them for DVD too.
Re: Compressing AVI files?
TMPGEnc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/index.html) is pretty good, but it's not free. AGK is good and there are plenty of tutorials about setting up, after which, encoding is very straight forward.

My understanding, maybe wrong, is that Merlin wants to write AVI's onto a DVD-ROM for either storage, or to play back directly as is. For this, i'd strongly stand by my suggestion of A.G.K.
If, however, you're looking to create DVD-Video Discs, playable on any regular DVD player, that's a different story altogether.

Could anyone recommend a free software that will ever so slightly compress the files/file so it can fit on DVD.
Ive treid DVD shrink but everytime i drag a file in it says unable to locate something.tfo..
Any other ideas lads
Cheers

How i think it reads is: He has many avi files that he wants to put onto one dvd to play on pc&dvd player,So thats why it needs to be compressed:) and the best program by far is convertx then use shrink to compress,Is that what you mean Merlin If not sorry i miss understood.

Good point. AGK is one of the better choices for recompressing the files. AutoMKV and MeGUI are similar programs equally worthy of consideration. :)
Re: Compressing AVI files?
I wonder why no one suggested cutting bits off (like the credit at the back), that would only take 30 seconds with Virtualdubmod and no need to reencode or whatever.
Or perhaps just put it onto 2 discs (or get a D9). Better than messing with transcoding.
