    Which OS after XP?

I have to say I never expected I'd be the author of a 'Which ...?' thread. Still, here I am pondering a changer and the possibilities before me are too unknown to weigh by myself right now, so, Hexites I thought you might help bring some simplicity and clarity.

The simple question is - I've been using XP but ever since seeing a friend who used Ubuntu I've been toying with the idea of jumping over to Linux - should I? Advs/Disadvs - for all the hassle is there any real difference?

The detail are - This is for a laptop. Toshiba. Not hugely powerful. I tend to use it for writing, surfing, Skype, and occasionally the occasional online game - not WoW or anything.

There also seem to be a few Linux options. How do they compare?

    Cheers guys!

    Re: Which OS after XP?

Excellent question, cos I'm pondering the same!

I've run Mandrake/Mandriva, Fedora/Redhat, Ubuntu, plus Mac OS/X at work which is sort of BSD/UNIX. They're generally excellent for productivity. I switch between Linux distros happily and couldn't easily recommend one over another. Ubuntu is fairly ubiquitous.

Pluses - fancy 3D desktop and other technical geekery if you've got decent 3D graphics, almost no fear of viruses/trojans, Linux has good Flash support recently, OpenOffice 3 is just released, Skype is available, and WINE will run Civ4 for me I've read that you can even run NVidia folding at home via WINE

Minuses - some driver problems, especially for laptops with odd chipsets, so do some research on your particular model! Limited games compatibility (e.g. I can't play X3 Reunion yet), though might not be a priority for you.

For old hardware and general purpose use, Linux is usually a good option.

    Re: Which OS after XP?

drivers might be a problem but older hardware is usually better supported then newer hardware tho not too old lol... you cant run everything via wine but games like cod4 can be run but minus any games linux distros are as good if not better then windows

Depends on how far away from the Windows look/feel you want to get.

What I'd do is download a selection of Live CD distro's, most distro's have a live CD option & have a punt like that. This gives you a broad spectrum of experiences before you commit & install anything.

    Re: Which OS after XP?

The ability to play games is the only thing that is stopping me from making the switch to Linux, although I have had my eye on WINE Doors just recently it looks promising because it make windows apps integrate more seamlessly with your desktop, more like a proper installation.

Had some experience with Dream Linux recently, its rather nice.

which games did you want to play online? Things like Half-life 2 will work on linux quite happily after a bit of a tweak. Wine doors allows you to install steam to.

    Yup, and if that is an issue, see the following;

The only thing stopping me going to Ubuntu full time is the lack of game support.

Wine and Cedega help but I find it much easier to use Vista when I want to play games.
