I have WMV files that play fine in WMP, but in MPC they only play properly for about 5 seconds, then the picture freezes and the sound continues.
Any ideas how to fix it? Ive updated K-lite Codec Pack, still has the same problem

my mam's computer does something similar to that..
you got a crap CPU?
cos that's her problem. (1.9GHz P4)
Im on a laptop, DualCore 1.4ghz, but if it was a processor issue surely WMP would have the same problem? But the videos play flawless in WMP, even HD. I dont think it is CPU related.
On MPC, no matter the filesize/resolution/bitrate, a WMV file will always freeze video a few seconds in
Do this:
1)Uninstall all media drivers (To prevent conflicts...)
2)Install K-Lite latest FULL Media codec pack from http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_co...k_download.htm
3)Use Media Player Classic (Included in K-Lite Pack) to watch the movies
99% of the time that will fix your problems. If not, post back.

Oh God no, not KLite. Codec packs are bad enough, but you might as well pour molten cheese over your laptop. It's about as advanced as KLite is.
If you must install a codec pack to get around the problem (and I never will), use a half decent one. This is recommended quite frequently, and especially so if you've got a 64-bit Windows OS.
I'm still of the opinion that you're much better off in the long run by finding out what is actually causing the problem, rather than just hitting it with a big, heavy hammer.
I wasn't saying you didn't have, it was more just pointing it out while I was writing about codec packs.
Presuming you mean Media Player Classic, what happens in other media players? VLC, KMPlayer, ZoomPlayer, etc?
i only use WMP and MPC, not a fan of other players
That's not the point, what does the same file do in those players? Play fine or stop after a few seconds?
OH right sorry, i thought you were just suggesting another player, i'll try out VLC
What is wrong with K-Lite?
You just install it and all media works perfectly.
Never had any problems, even with HD movies.
I never understand how people can bash a soloution to a problem without any real explanation or proof...
VLC plays it, but screws with the video when skipping forward
MPC still freezes a few seconds in
Marcos, I don't know about MPC, as I don't use it, but in KMPlayer you can choose to ignore the built-in decoder and choose the system default instead. I presume there's such an option in MPC too.
Because if further problems occur, and it's far more likely with a codec pack than without a one, as you're just plunking a whole host of things on your system, at the point uninstall or trying to find the problem, your system is littered with the remnants, leaving a lot of media without a registered codec.
You'll struggle find many respectable members who've ever recommended KLite, let alone now.
I'd check & see what filters are being loaded by MPC when you play back your wmv files. You can block and prioritise all your filters in MPC (and you might want to try MPC Hme Cinema mod, which has a lot of updated in-built codecs).
WMV DMO decoder (i think it's called) is the MS WMV filter, so I'd find whatever is loading when you play back WMV, block it in the enternal filter list, then add the MS one.
And I'd agree that codec packs are garbage, you end up installing all sort of junk you don't need. In most cases, MPC, Haali Media Splitter & ffdshow will play every video file type.
I have to agree - i'd shy away from K-lite too (from experience I might add). I stick with shark's pack for VMC (linked by this_is_gav) too (also from experience).
Just an opinion tis all!
