    Deleting Vista System Files

    Hello,

I recently has a bit of a problem with CHKDSK and vista in that it replaced all the security descriptors rendering it useless. To save my files I installed Vista on my D drive so that I could access C drive then pull all my files across. This all went to plan so the next stage was to format C and re-install vista. Again this went to plan. All until I was left with 16GB of Vista system files on my drive. I took ownership of the files and assigned full rights to my username but it still won't let me delete them.

Has anyone managed to remove Vista system files without having to format the drive (as I have over 400GB of files on there).

    Thanks.

I would do it with a linux 'live' disk, maybe Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download).

Boot from this cd and this would give you access to the files. (I hope) You could then chose which of the files to delete/move

    Hi Vinny,

Thanks for that. I did give it a try but to make things more complicated the drive with the vista folders on is 2 x 500GB drives in RAID 0. The drive shows up on Ubuntu but I can't mount it so I am unable to delete the folder. Do you have any idea how I can load the software RAID drivers?

    Re: Deleting Vista System Files

I've been messing with multi-booting and partitioning recently and used a few different LiveCDs.......pretty sure they all wouldn't allow changes to the file system of my vista partition.

Not sure why though as I didn't bother investigating (so might possibly have just been my setup), just saved what I needed to a different drive.

    Re: Deleting Vista System Files

Is it the original C: drive that contains this 16GB of files? What are the files called / what folder are they in?

Are these files on the the newly formatted drive?

Or are they copies of the Vista folder from the corrupted installation?
