    Office 2007

    I hate the thing.
    - But everyone else at uni now seams to be using it and me being on office 2000 still, because if nothing else i hate the interface with office07, is starting to cause issues.

Is it possable to have both office 07 and office 2000 on the same intall of winXP?

What kind of issues? Those using Office 2007 saving files in a format Office 2000 can't read? I.e docx etc? This might help you if that is indeed the issue you are facing.

If not, tell us what the issues are.

    Re: Office 2007

I tired this with previous versions (never 2k and 2k7) and it always worked but with a few niggles.

In fact, office seemed to like to re-configure itself as if it had just started for the very first time, every time I switched from 1 version to the other.

Not sure if 2k7 has a more stringent installer to stop you though, best to try it and see

    Re: Office 2007

Yeah, ive got the compatabilty patch jobbie so i can open the docx files.
    - Why they felt the need to change the file type and extention who knows, silly fecks.

The issues pottentially are what we will be swaping around and editing files (group project work etc) including some fairly complexly formated documents (non std styles, images, tables, layout crap) and i can just see it geting really messy?

Maybe with the patch word2k will just work exactly the same as word2k7 just without the horible interface? Not sure. Just sort of keen not to 'find out on the job' half way through the project that its a total ball ache and i should have just switched to work. Partiularly as i have put myself down for compiling and managing the larger documents, and i dont want to piss of the rest of the grp.

    Re: Office 2007

You could get the others to make their Office progs save to Office 2000 formats by default. So instead of saving to .docx make Word 2007 save to .doc.

in group projects, its often easier to bite the bullet and compromise.

The office 2k7 interface is actually pretty damn nice when u get used to it.

Failing that, you might find you can nab a copy of 2k3 which has much better support at reading .docx files?

Probably because there are new features that wouldn't work with the existing document format.

.docx is actually pretty cool, you can open them up in a lot of compression apps and see the XML document along with all the embeded objects as actual files. So, some idiot sends you "a jpeg" of something in a word document normally and you are pretty stuck, you need to mess about with copy and paste and imaging apps to get it out to use it somewhere. Now you just open it up in WinRAR (i think it works with this one) and there is the JPEG. nice.

They are also a lot more efficient and shouldn't balloon in size randomly. Deleting content will also reduce the file size, something that didn't always happen before.

Office 2007's interface is one of the best things that MS have done recently IMO.

It can take a while o get used to it, but its so much faster in the long term

It does take a while to get used to but to be honest you can't be stuck in the past when it comes to office. Staffs uses office 2007 throughout I think now Agent? My old college has office 2007 as well now.. Certainly at my current job there is the start of migration from office 2003 to 2007. You can't stay with office 2000 forever

    Re: Office 2007

We are moving to 2007 by default because any new machine we get has it. I don't think it will be too long before 2003 is in the minority in our place.

Office 2K7 I don't have an issue with, its more Exchange 2K7 which I think will be the real head-ache when things get migrated over/upgraded, as the majority of exchange servers (well at least ours anyway) really are not capable of running exchange 2k7 without major hardware upgrades/new systems installed.

Office 2K7 interface is great, yes it takes a while to get used to but great.

Exchange 2007 is also great, the fact that it autoconfigures Outlook 2007 is sooooo helpful.

    Ok, well thats quite cool.

IM just worried how it will run on my pc.
    - It runs very laggy on some of the older uni pc's they have put it on, and there far faster than this machine.

IM only running an athlon 1800+ (1.4mhz) although i do have 2gb of ram.

Even with Exchange 2003, Oulook 2007 is sooooooo much easier to setup than Oulook 2003 ever was. I've done it a couple of times at work (even though that is supposed to be done by our support contactors) and it really did only take about 10 seconds, and that included finding the menu etc.

    Impressed me that did.

    Re: Office 2007

Whilst many will complain about the new file format introduced by Microsoft in Office 2007, their argument that their old binary format was reaching it's limits and that the new file formats were more extensible cannot really be disputed.

However, it has led to a lot of people having to install the compatibility filters - but at least forward compatibility filters are available - how many other vendors would typically provide them?

Although it's possible to swap files between Office 2007 and 2003, by either using the filter for Office 2003 or by saving the document in Office 2007 to an earlier format, I have found that as the newer version of Word uses a different internal text formatted model, if you have a heavily formatted document, differences in rendering and printing will arise.

If the group documents are going to be doing a round trip between yourself and others in your group who are all using Word 2007, then I would look to use Word 2003 at a minimum, if not 2007, just to make your life easier.

With 2GB or RAM, performance should be fine, even on a 1.4Ghz CPU - but it does depend on what else you've got running at the same time!
