    Activating Windows

    Hi,

I recently changed a few bits of hardware in my pc and when i booted it up it asked me to re-activate and register my genuine copy of windows xp. The problem is it tries to connect to the net to do this and the connection isnt set up yet. It just logs off after trying. If i have another hard drive with the connection set up already and i put that hard drive in will it pick up the connection?

I have been told to call microsoft but cant seem to find the right number, does anyone have the phone number?

    Many thx

    Re: Activating Windows

Putting the old hard drive in will just activate that copy of windows.. as soon as you get rid of it and put in the new hard drive then you'll have to activate again.

Why don't you just set up the connection with the new hardware (select activate later or something)?

    Re: Activating Windows

on an activation screen, there should be a button for "activate over the internet" and another for "by phone"

on the phone screen, select your country in the pull-down and it'll give you the number to call

    Re: Activating Windows

Ah of course putting in a new hard drive wont help i should have know that

When i tried it last night i couldnt get that far to be able to set one up. It just asked if i wanted to register or activate the copy, i tried both and also put dont activate at this time but it said unable to connect and went to the log off screen which i thought was a bit odd.

Ill try it again tonight and seewhat happens.

    Thx for the info.

I always use the phone activation as the automatic one never seems to work for me. It's dead easy, all automated.

    Re: Activating Windows

Never needed to phone MS for an activation, however my laptop won't activate for some reason so I think I might need to give them a phone and sort this one out. It should be a 10 machine license and number I have used as past of the Microsot Direct Access pack, but something may have gone wrong with it.

    Re: Activating Windows

I've had to reactivate my Vista Ultimate x64 three times, mainly due to excessive motherboard BIOS up/down grading, in a desperate effort to get S3 resume working. The first and third times were fine - they just gave me an activation code.

But on the second time that I called, I was simply told that they would not activate me and that I had to buy a new license. Given that I had splashed out on four Ultimate licences (OEM) to upgrade all my machines, I was a bit miffed - but in the end the guy agreed to let me activate my Vista... For his sake it was just in the nick of time, because I was about to flip from being patient to being very stroppy....

    Re: Activating Windows

Lol omg mate that sucks. I think i would have lost it to. Someone else told me i would have to pay to re-avtivate windows but luckily i got an automated thing which just gave me a code to put in.

The bad thing is now i changed the cpu and the pc wont boot passed the windows logo screen so god knows whats up with it now.
