Unwanted side effects of folding...

So I thought I would start folding again, now that its colder (its a good room heater) and now that a new version of the clients are out (maybe it will work this time!)...

Got SMP working. Yay! I can exit it without it going suicidal and deleting the WU now

Got GPU working, but it still makes my 9800gtx squeal like a mofo, so much so that it has given me a head ache for all of today! So I'm not sure if I will keep this running which is a shame as it does generate quite a few ppd... I gave up on the GPU client last time because of this...

Yeh my 9800GTX fan is loud on load , think its on 65&#37; or something like that on load which keeps temps to 60-70C but i want it to be quieter >.<, cant change it as the card doesnt like me. SMP doesnt work for me, just sits there doing nothing so cant do that. I run it when im away for like an hour downloading a new demo or something.

Squeal or Buzz? My one used to be fine a full throttle for folding, I'd only hear a buzz from my PSU

Doing CPU + GPU folding = good heat I'd say it's a sort of efficient way of heating your room up

Its not the fan its some coils/pwm or something else. The fan noise is still low. I don't get this problem with games or any other GPU loading app...

Squeal/buzz/squeak call it what ever you want... its just very high pitched and damn annoying... there are that some cards do it, and some don't - although some old people with damaged hearing might not be able to hear the frequency, so if you read online that brand XYZ doesn't squeak, it might be wrong...

most games don't load the card quite so heavily compared to GPU FAH, my 8800GT squeals/whines for about 20% of a WU.

SiM, does your card whine/squeal on the Crysis options screen?

even with the load on minimum in the fah config, it still squeaks, but its like a pulsing squeak rather than a constant one...

I don't either - DL the demo for free, or the other game that squeals for me on the main page is HL2/CSS

Em anyone else notice the new nvidia drivers affect gpu folding? mine just made my pc crash, luckily office 2007 recovered my work or else i would of lost 5 pages!.(i got the BSOD).

Squeaking power inductors are pretty much case-by-case.

If you can locate it, then a hard-setting glue from a glue gun can reduce it... although gluing your graphics card isn't always the wisest thing to do.

oh well, looks like i spoke too soon. SMP client still doesn't work. Finished my first WU and now it doesn't want to continue doing anything. I am not even sure if it uploaded the results... looks like i have to give up folding again

the higher the clock speed, the more it'll squeel though.

maybe try underclocking it a little?

tried underclocking before... doesn't really make much difference... and I did buy it to play games on so underclocking is a bit silly

if you've got it overclocked and you're scared of it overheating, then don't OC
