Re: Ubuntu 8.10 - released
Have it downloaded - Might wack it on later. Cant test the Wifi or 3G (Gigabit network in my house ;))
Re: Ubuntu 8.10 - released
wifi support IS better - installed it on the boss' new laptop a few days ago, and it included drivers for the new Intel WiFi Link 5100 card he had, which wasn't in 8.04

Could you get someone to do a live usb for you?
Re: Ubuntu 8.10 - released
Wireless cards seem to be far better supported with 8.10! Both my USB and PCI cards were recognised by the LiveCD!! :)

Re: Ubuntu 8.10 - released
I've been using it since it came out, as a live cd. It seems faster and more responsive than 8.04.1 (which didn't display correctly), so much so, that next weekend I'm going to install it properly.

If you have Windows installed already why not use Wubi?

Re: Ubuntu 8.10 - released
It's nice, it even supports Bluetooth mice/keyboards without any config-file editing now!

It will install, you just have to leave it for awhile and wait for the I/O errors to subside, I'm not sure what's causing that problem but it's a pretty big cockup. If it flat out refuses to install on your system, then the LiveUSB stick approch is a good work around.
Re: Ubuntu 8.10 - released
Yeah, USB Install worked fine for me on my desktop.
Take care when installing GRUB at the end of the install though, it installs to /dev/sda (or it did with me), but having booted off a USB Flash Drive, /dev/sda wasn't my Hard Disk, but my USB Flash Drive, so I had to boot with it installed, unmount it and then run a grub-install to install GRUB to my HD - worked fine after that though!
I've been using 8.10 since about 2 weeks before the final release, it's been pretty solid for me, a bit slow to boot - but I'm googling to fix that justnow!

If you boot with any kind of optical media in your cd/dvd drive it will kill boot times because of the aforementioned I/O errors (took as long as 3 or 4 minutes for me when I tested it). I'm sure the Ubuntu devs are working on finding a kernel version or patch which fixes it.

Interesting bug, please file it at launchpad.net
Re: Ubuntu 8.10 - released
Will do, I thought it was normal behaviour because the USB Flash Drive was the first storage device detected.
I'll head over and try and word a decent report!
