    Vista is like a marriage!??!

Right, I've popped my Vista cherry having bought a new laptop making my trusty old XP evo redundant.

Now after a few days breaking it in, I get the feeling that using Vista is being married to a model.....

She always looks stunning and your mates all want a go on her. But although she tries hard, she's slow and secretly I lust after her older, well used, less attractive and recently dumped sister.

    Do I need help?

Vista is hard. Adding 01h to the first hexedecimal couplet in Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\UserPreferencesMask to get focus-follows-mouse is not obvious.

I can't understand what your saying, as I've never had the skills to pull a model...

Althogh I will stick up for Vista. Once you've learnt how to turn alot of the junk of and streamline it,
vista is a very nice OS and pretty fast.

And I use windows 2000, who would that be the then ...?

Come to think of it, before then I must have been married to Win98SE because it was death that caused us to part (Win98 failed to run on my newest PC, no matter what I tried)... I still remember the good days, the bad memories fade with time.

You don't really even need to streamline it. The only thing I've turned off is Windows Defender (and got UAC in quiet mode, though that won't affect performance). Let Indexing and SuperFetch sort itself out for a week or so and go back to an XP install on a similar spec (though unable to use as much memory of course) and you'll not be able to believe how slow everything is.

Re: Vista is like a marriage!??!

Reducing the windows padding to 1 instantly made me like vista a whole lot more visually, that and 4gb RAM helps a lot.

Well, ive been married to this Model since a long time now also had her get a lift and other beauty stuff ( service pack 1 etc ), it looks great and works fine for me too, you just need to stop her nagging (UAC) and the rest should work fine!

Does UAC really bother anyone after installing programs?

If something is wanting admin access, I want to know about it...

    This.

It's taken a long time, but I think people are now finally getting used to the idea that you shouldn't be running as a fully privileged user for day to day use. Barring some sudo-like system I really do think UAC is awesome.

Now to get the devs to change their ways when writing applications that need full admin access just to run...

Re: Vista is like a marriage!??!

I actually think UAC could be improved vastly with the inclusion of an exclusions list (like the Firewall - it'll request admin access to modify it, but its easy to alter them later if needed) as a few, but not many apps require admin access.

This is highly annoying if you have one that starts on bootup.

Re: Vista is like a marriage!??!

Norton labs are working on making UAC a bit friendlier, and have released a replacement (beta) nortonlabs.com/inthelab/uac.php. However, Microsoft have made it less intrusive with windows 7 by letting you skip UAC for certain operations.
