    installing Raid

Can I install/setup Raid in flight. I have 2 Sata drives already installed with Windows XP Pro and in use. I have cleared/cleaned/formatted 1 drive and would now like to use Raid. Can this be done in flight so that I dont have to re-install windows again?

    Many thanks
    Ian

    Re: installing Raid

If you're setting up a mirrored array (RAID 1), then it should be possible as it would be classed as rebuilding an array, but if you are setting up a striped array (RAID 0), then no you would need to start from scratch. (afaik)

On the off-chance that you've finished your dinner by now, any chance of an update? I.e. how did it go?

    Re: installing Raid

been away for a few days but here goes:
I must have made a pigs ear somewhere as I still ended up re-installing XP, fortunately had take backup so was easy to restore.
Tested it out afters by pulling the power to one of the drives. Systen still come up and high lighted the fact that one of the drives was now degraded. All ok so far.
Put power back to drive and rebooted the machine, now have both drives degraded!
Worked out what I was supposed to do and all is now working great.

    Many thanks

Not usually, as the \array has to be defined for both disks, which usually makes any existing data on the disk inaccessible (similar to deleting a partition table). Only safe way is to create the array, then clone (image) the existing disk onto the array.

However there is a post (iirc) that does explain how to create a raid array in Windows without re-installing.
