Security - Do I need to upgrade to IE7?

HI, i just had to do a re-install of XP, and have all the usual security patches going on.
Since I never, ever use IE6, is there any security risk from NOT installing IE7?
I am aware that it's fairly integrated into Windows, however if i never launch it, and ensure that no other app ever launches it, shall i leave IE6 as it is?

I think IE7 comes together with SP3 but it might be wrong here. You will be able to update to certain point without IE7 tho...

There's a good number of applications that use Windows functions for dealing with HTML which use IE in turn, so it's better to update to IE7 anyway. Better safe than sorry. And yeah, I think SP3 comes with IE7, so hopefully, there should be little to do except install SP3.

Sp3 didn't use to include IE7 - not sure if they updated it?

Truely?.. Odd, you would have thought Microsoft would have jammed it in there, considering the security improvements IE7 brought. IE7 was released before SP3 right?.. Or is my memory becoming faulty?

A lot of corporate applications still require IE6. MS would be in trouble if they bundled IE7 with SP3.
I still wish they had, mind.

Re: Security - Do I need to upgrade to IE7?

You cannot uninstall Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 after you install Windows XP Service Pack 3

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950719

Not sure what the cirumstances would be though if you did a clean install using XP SP3 media from MS and then installed IE7 and then tried to remove?

Re: Security - Do I need to upgrade to IE7?

I have SP3 and IE6, but I've tweaked the settings in IE6 to less insecure levels then blocked it from the internet in Comodo (firewall), have Opera as the main browser with FF3 and Sleipnir just in case I need them. (Sleipnir is set to use the Gecko (Mozilla/FF) engine, not Trident (IE)!

Its worse than bugs, its BAD design on the internet layer.

Things like the XML com crap that is used by so many people inside MS Office from VB....... Insecurity at its finest.

The problem is they can't really rectify it, but been MS they have to keep backwards comptability.

sure you can, i did, not through add/remove though. i got rid of 8 beta then 7 while troubleshooting an issue.

you start the uninstall via the command line.
