    Vista freezing. WTF?

    Morning all,
Hoping someone can help/ confirm what I think.

S939 system, A8n SLI deluxe mobo, 3 hard drives, system files on a 74gb raptor, 2 x 300 gb storage drives, no raid.

Took the system apart the other day to dust it, and install eSata faceplate.

Put it back together, and Vista keeps freezing. This varies between freezing showing whatever I was doing at the time, or going to a light blue or black screen if screensaver has activated. Never did this before.

I'm using the crappy red SATA cables that the mobo came with. they're quite stiff, and to keep the case tidy, I have bend them a bit. My thought is that somehow I may have damaged one or more of them (the system drive cable?) which is causing this. My power supply is ample for my system, so it's not that. All fans are working. Drives still spin when system frozen.

I've ordered some new, longer, flexy sata cables, but does that sound plausible to anyone?

It's possible - can you disconnect the eSATA faceplate if that seems to have been the catalyst and see what happens? Anything in the event log when this happens?

Ah. Ahem. Event log. Yes indeedy. Right.

    ...

How do I do that then?

I can't see that it's the SATA faceplate: I've wired it up to the MObo and power, but I don't have a cable to connect to the external drive yet (advertised as eSATA, but it's not). Have purchased a sata to esata.

I was wondering whether it may even be the sata sockets on the mobo... they seem rather frail...

I suggested disconnecting it as it was the last change made before the issue occurred - always suspect that as the cause, then work from there.

As for the event log - start>run>eventvwr (you should get a UAC prompt)

    Re: Vista freezing. WTF?

Decided on a reinstall and rebuild with new locking sata cables.

Glad I did. Cut the clutter, got the wiring sorted out, reduced power cables on modular supply from 4 to 2! Nice bit of forward planning. And put my neons back in
