    64bit Vista...

I'm thinking of venturing into 64Bit Vista territory.

I've been messing with 64bit GNU/Linux for a while and haven't had any major problems, but what with software repositories it makes it a bit easy.

In terms of Vista are there any pit falls I should be aware of before I start?

    Cheers,

    Rob.

You may run into issues with some codecs, and you can't use 16 bit installers.

The pros far outweigh the cons though.

Steer clear of Creative's drivers, apart from that, flawless for me.

    Why's that 0iD ?

I've just move my X-Fi Xtrememusic across to my rig and I've had no issues with the latest drivers from the creative website.

Yes, the auto downloader system doesn't work, but the X-Fi mixer and changer applet works perfectly once downloaded and installed.

Oh they work now, but it's been a long haul to get them that way. Was a long time before my X-Fi Platinum worked properly.

It's a long haul getting people to just accept Vista with all this FUD floating about

    Re: 64bit Vista...

It's more solid and requires less re-installs to keep healthy than XP. Since it came out I have had to reinstall only once.

    Re: 64bit Vista...

Aye, well I've been using Vista 32bit on my lappy and since SP1 its been a lot better, in fact I'd go as far as to say I've enjoyed using it, other than the start up times. That's why I'm considering sticking it on my main rig.

    What version would you recommend?

The only good thing I've found about Ultimate is Tinker. Fantastic game

It really depends on what functionality you require. If you need media centre and domain access then you'll be wanting Ultimate. If you need media centre but no domain support then it's Home Premium. If you need domain support but no media centre it's Business.

I personally think Home Basic is a false economy, but... whatever floats your boat.

Ultimate is nice, but in hindsight, so not worth the extra cash.

    Re: 64bit Vista...

I think Premium looks like the most sensible version to go for, a happy medium so to speak.
I'm a little worried that I might be jumping on the Vista wagon at the wrong time though, what if I fork out for a license and Microsoft and partners just abandon it in favour of Windows7...

Well... Windows 7 has no release date as yet, but is to be built on the Vista kernel. I don't think you're likely to see a release version of Windows 7 in the next 12 months, so it's really up to you.

7 will be a refined version of Vista - tis true - but signs are it'll probably ship late next year and given the quality of the (very old) PDC build that'd make sense. We'll have a better idea after the public beta and how quickly that starts feeding into release candidates. It'd make sense for them to target the holiday season though - and technically nov next year is 3 years since Vista shipped (albeit not fully publically).
