    AV sofware for Windows 95!!

Dont laugh! We have a computer that we still need incase of emergency at work. It is a pentium 2 with 32mg of ram!

Anyway is there any AV software that we can use on it as is OS is windows 95! Most stuff today is too resource hungry would slow the computer too much.

Re: AV sofware for Windows 95!!

If you can find a really really old version of Norton but to be honest there are so many holes in 95 no AV is really going to help. What kind of emergency would need Windows 95? I think you are already in a bad state of emergency when your backup plan is Windows 95.

Re: AV sofware for Windows 95!!

Do you have to run Win95 on it? Or is it simply that it's got 32MB of RAM and so you do run it?
Because i'm thinking of a really trim Linux alternative

Re: AV sofware for Windows 95!!

The software we use which was made for 95 it is to be used in the event of network failure which we have from time to time. We've had to de-mothball it a few times. The software sends data via modem on a phoneline. The reason we need it, is it is send to an area where its so far in the sticks there is no broadband access. We cant update software as technology and networks have moved on and they no longer support this method of data transfer. But new company policy demands every computer needs AV on.

Re: AV sofware for Windows 95!!

Can you dual boot it with another OS such as D.S.Linux, and boot into this alternative to run an anti-virus scan from time to time? It's not as good as real-time scanning, but it meets your objective.
It might be an idea to up the RAM if you can.

As an alternative, get a £50 PC from ebay and stick Win95 on it, along with another OS (again either a Linux, or even Win2000) to do the scanning in the same way. That way, you still have this independent machine to use a modem, with Win95 for the software, and the ability to check for anti-virus stuff.

I think Sophos still has an AV application for win 95/98
But as Jay says I'd just VM this machine.

Re: AV sofware for Windows 95!!

drweb 4.44 works on windows 95.
    www.drweb.com

but i agree run in a VM.

btw when i used windows 95 only 2 reboots where needed. both because of the same scratched cd. two hard reboots, dont think it ever needed any soft reboots.

also the bbc still use a few machines running windows 95,if it does the job why change?

A program that old might run OK under Wine in Linux.

Then again I guess you'd need to invest time into finding out, which if it turns out it doesn't, would be a pain.

Because it's completely and utterly unsupported, and it has a horrific security model. If this is business critical you need the software moved to a platform that's supported. If it's not business critical why still use it?
