    Developed a strange affection for...

    Windows Vista

A complete turn around, when I first got it I hated it, had all kinds of problems. I removed it and put XP on then just recently I decided to give it another go, installed it, put SP1 on (which did wonders) and now I actually quite like it, so much so that I find myself defending it when people slag it off... What happened?!

    Am I alone?

Guilty, it is the shininess I like I think... I like Linux shininess as well there might be a connection between me trying linux and giving vista a chance (sounds strange but I think there is)

I don't play games as much anymore these days so I'm discovering more of the features e.g. the gadget bar and aero.

No, but I never used to slag it off/hate it either. It just never gave me that feeling XP did when I had it installed. Until I was forced to use it and now I'd never go back

Re: Developed a strange affection for...

I would never put XP on my current laptop or my own desktop, but I also wouldn't put Vista on the PCs I sort of look after for my parents and brother, they are just too old.

Up until recently the only Vista I had used was the standard install by Asus on my laptop and it was less than stellar. A fresh install with SP1 and latest drivers has done wonders for it. Not to mension Vista 64bit n my desktop with 8GB. mmmm smooth.

Nope, I too when it first came out loathed it. Slow, buggy, crashed, ages to do anything ... Now, on the same hardware its great!

Re: Developed a strange affection for...

Its like a completely different animal to when I first used it... it used to crash, load up with weird graphical glitches, take ages to do anything. Now its really quite responsive, its actually faster to access the menus etc than XP was on my machine.

Re: Developed a strange affection for...

am i the only one who didn't really have any issues Pre SP1?

Worked fine on media PC, this was the first PC i built since vista had come out, worked fine on new laptop (pre-installed), worked fine on new desktop (64bit).

I think a lot of the problems, where down to incredibly piss poor journalisim, and a total lack of press handling from MS. Things like the "omgzno it idles using 1gb of RAM", been taken as vista is bloated, rather than the previous OS's where moronic to not pre-cache.

My only problem is how much memory it takes in the background of whatever I'm doing at the time. But hey.. it's only about 1/50 of my total memory, so it's no problem!

the more I use it the more I grow to dislike it. Its disk access it poor and it annoys me! 2008 server is also bloody annoying.

I prefer Vista for most things (security being the main one), apart from the speed issue like Jay above.

Dual booting between XP and Vista for various reasons. The speed increase in XP is a clear cut case for me (Flame on in 3...2...)

Re: Developed a strange affection for...

I was the same when I first used Vista on my PC, it was taken back to XP pretty quickly I have to say. Then when I got bored one day I decided hmm now I have 4 gigs of ram lets try Vista again, and I haven't looked to go back to XP since.

I'm even defending it to people who come into buy PC's and Laptops and complain that they don't want Vista on their new kit as they heard a friend of a friend of a friend's son say it was rubbish without any justified reason.

I'll happily hear people out when they have valid reasons for disliking vista, but like behemoth said above me, when they just jump on the "vistas ****e!" bandwagon it really annoys me .

I like vista. It looks good. It's fast enough for me and does everything I want. It's got some decent features (e.g. the sidebar is a nice touch). Overall, I like it .
