DVR-MS & windows movie maker, issues.

Ok, so following my previous thread on converting DVR-MS files i've been using windows movie maker.

I've done a few films and TV shows removing the adds and so forth and then converting the files to wmv.

But all of a sudden the files don't want to show in the preview window. When i first drag the media to the storyboard and play from that it works and the picture is there, but the second i try to move the slider or split the media the pic goes and i'm left with just sound.

On MS website it says about the filters it uses and if you get problems re-set to defualts, but nothing.

Works with AVI and WMV files though. Just not DVR-MS

This is on my second PC so not the same as the one in my system.
    Running vista 32 home premium
    Ati 3650
    e6600 2 X 2.4
    2gig ram

    Any clues

Re: DVR-MS & windows movie maker, issues.

Is there no one out there can help?

I'm sure it's just a matter of finding the right codec but the ones i use i've updated and havn't helped.
At the mo the only way is to publish the files and convert and then remove all the adds after it's changed format. Basicly means you have to publish the files to your PC twice and it takes forever.

    Can anybody help?

Re: DVR-MS & windows movie maker, issues.

It's not a case of finding the right codec. DVR-MS is just MPEG-2 is a different container (probably based on ASF as Directhex said in your other thread).

Windows Movie Maker did handle this fine a couple of times, so that indicates the required codecs are either built into WMM or are available on your system.

Now it doesn't work, so either WMM is broken or you have installed something else that has messed around with the codecs on your PC, causing WMM to flop about when you load s DVR-MS.

Have you tried removing that component from windows, re-booting, then adding it again?

Nope, nothing installed recently, nothing uninstalled.

Not entirly sure now it's ever worked properly. The smaller files from TV shows at 35 -50 min don't seem to give me a problem, i can go back and forth on the timeline and split without it ever being a problem.
When i put a film file in there (normally over 2 gig) then it'll go black the first or second time i run the time line up/down on the video.

    aaaah

there might be the problem. Perhaps WMM doesn't like files greater than 2GB.

Funny thing is i convert it to WMV and file sizes are still the same but it works well in any other format. Just doesn't like large DVR-MS.
I can convert and then chop but it's a bit of a pain.

    Buggy software then?

Is this XP or Vista? I heard they improved WMM quite a bit in Vista, never used it though.
