    Vista x64 Issues

On my home PC, Vista x64 SP1, Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, recently every time I open Control Panel, the window comes up blank and then disappears. Also loading Windows Update, the window never shows. Also the same on another account. Any ideas where to start digging?

Oh and its a legit activated retail copy of Vista Ultimate.

How recently? What was the last thing you added before this started happening? Have you tried System Restoring back to before it happened?

    Re: Vista x64 Issues

Last thing I remember doing was my normal ccleaner and windows updates. I hardly use this pc at home, and I haven't installed nothing on it recently. It does sound kinda viral ... but I haven't been playing with anything! Spybot came back clean. No shortcut to system restore, so I run it manually (rstrui.exe from cmd) and I get System Restore does not appear to be functioning correctly. blah blah blah, error code 0x81000202

A quick Google shows its a particular service which isn't running, but even if it is started, a manual restore point is no good beyond the problem!

Oh well, I'll take it into work tomorrow! Time for a format. Hasn't had one in a while. Before then, I'll just run Kaspersky again ...

    Ditch Kaspersky. Use Linux.

    Useful post above :/

Anyway, without sounding like a stuck record that sounds suspiciously like the rounds of viral software the stop virus packages updating or starting in some cases, blocks certain anti viral websites, stops windows updates and system restore - however you've successfully used an anti-spyware package so not too sure on that.

Just in case I catch you before you bite the bullet anyway, might be worth running Malwarebytes over it too, normally quite good at picking up the more obscure bits and bobs. Otherwise a format certainly won't do any harm
    Moo.

Hey I am all for Linux, in the right conditions. For me I game on the PC and Windows is the best. Bit the bullet and reformatted, all fine now.

This. A computer is a tool, and it's no use having the best tool if it's inappropriate for the job. I've got a Dremel which is pretty awesome, but it's not so great at knocking down walls.

    So am I

But we got this nob advising everyone to "use Linux" without even reading the problem I bet. Just sees 2 keywords, "Windows" + "Problem" = Recommend Linux. Oooh very helpful.

Indeed. Well he needs to get to 20 posts for free Scan shipping anyway, so he might as well do it one way! LOL!

Nice dremel analogy, although if you create a fracture in a wall with even a small tool, you can bring it down.

I thought it might be a little more original than the usual car analogy that gets thrown around
