    System restore

    Hi,
went into system restore in Vista64 for the first time (havent bothered with it before as I assumed regular restore points were being made), and it wouldnt start up. Going into 'system protection' and then system restore, it can't find any of my drives. There should be a list of drives with a checkbox next to them, but all I get is 'searching...' and my hard drive complaining.

Googling reveals one or two people with the same problem, but no fixes... anyone have any ideas?

With any luck I won't have to post for help for a while after this :S

    Thanks all.

    A single Western Digital 640GB WD6400AAKS, SATA

My install of vista is fairly new, so Format and reinstall is an option. Want to avoid if possible tho.

    Re: System restore

Im not sure what you mean by controller, it's attached directly to the SATA on Asus PK5C motherboard. Sp1 is installed, came on OEM Windows disk.

    Cheers

Ok - is it plugged into the JMicron or one of the Intel ports? Is it configured as IDE, RAID or AHCI in the BIOS?

    Re: System restore

It is plugged into the master ICH9 SATA socket (not JMicron). As far as Im aware, it is configured as IDE, but I will check later.

In that case... it certainly should show up in System Restore. Does anything show up in the event log?

    Re: System restore

Had a look at event logs, didnt understand it, hehe.

No viruses detected with Kaspersky 2009.

Just vista being Vista I guess.

Im going to reinstall I think, not convinced this is stable.

    Thanks for advice

    Re: System restore

Ok, I reinstalled and the problem went away - loaded Asus drivers, Kaspersky, ATI drivers - restore problem came back. Reinstalled Vista again (probably not necessary but I was completely confused), loaded Kaspersky and ATI drivers - no system restore problem.

Im guessing the problem is Intel INF update utility, whatever that is. Do I actually need this? If so, hoepfully downloading the newer versions will solve the problem, I guess the drivers on a motherboard cd are pretty out of date.

    Thanks
