    Re: Antivirus Protection..?

kaspersky is pretty good, but it has fallen behind recently..
nod32 has been highly praised for its heuristic scan and is probably the best at the moment
avira is ok too but the heuristic gets alot of false positives

i'm using avg free atm which suits my needs just fine

I feel for the people using Norton and McAfee! Change to something else (Kaspersky gets my vote) and watch your system fly!

Worthy of note is Sophos for business. That rules.

    Re: Antivirus Protection..?

I'm a long time user of NOD32, although since using the latest incarnation of Smart Security, have had to replace most installations with Sophos, as it seems to like deleting the message body of completely random e-mails (it's a known issue, but doesn't seem to have been addressed).

I'd still recommend it for most people however.

For home use, Avast! Home Edition seems to fit the bill.

Fly? to be honest I've not noticed any difference between having McAffee on here an not... maybe because I have a quad core?

I just use coz I get it for free from O2, I'd probably go for NOD32 otherwise but why spend money if you don't have to?

    Re: Antivirus Protection..?

just to let everyone know what the outcome of this thread was, i've decided to go for Kaspersky, been using it a couple of days now and so far it's been very good. performs much better than AVG and even stopped me being owned by a website that someone tried to link me to on MSN that seemed very legit.

popped into PC World and bought it from there, 3 user edition for £25.
or a single user edition for £40.
i must admit, i was tempted to spend £15 more and lose 2 licenses

I dont use any anti virus. Never have.

Every few months I visit http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/ for a quick check up, but frankly, I just dont open email from people I dont know.

I dont trawl the net for porn, I don't download stuff unless it's drivers and updates from massive corporations and so far... so good.

My missus has had one once, Housecall grabbed it for me.

I like my pc to start and be running really fast. I hate waiting. So hate Anti Virus.

there was a virus outbreak on a winrar download at download.com a few weeks back, lots of people got infected.. not because it was porn or dodgy files.

To be honest I've never had any noticable performance issues with McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i. Are the home versions notably slower or more bloated or is it just that I'm generally unobservant and it's actually really slowing things down? I used Norton for a while before and that *really* caused a noticable slow down.

I dont see why you need more than a router and AV software for files downloaded.
I use kaspersky cause you can turn it off and it doesnt have any services running in order for you to load it back up.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Re: Antivirus Protection..?

I just checked my Vista box at home and... Kaspersky does indeed run a service (2 in fact, by the looks of it). Just because something runs as a service doesn't make it a bad thing.

I need to find a reason to put another order in at Scan so I can pick up a new 3 user/1 year license as mine's due to expire next month and the OEM licenses are so much cheaper than buying direct from Kaspersky online.

    Re: Antivirus Protection..?

Avast! here for higher detection rates than something like 90% of paid products and for not being Norton/Symantec branded. If I was to use a paid for package, it'd be Kaspersky or Nod32 purely on the lack of invasiveness and high rates.
When building machines for people though I tend to use AVG in all my images - the detection rates are lower than some others but for free it's certainly not a terrible product - and more importantly for the end user it's very easy to use without having to understand the technicalities and terms in virus mashing.
