BootMGR is compressed - ctrl alt del to restart

    Right guys,

I compressed my hd with Vista ultimate 64bit on and cancelled half way through. Then when i turned my pc on this morning it won't boot and says BootMGR is compressed. I had no idea, and found out it was due to the compression, found some fixes, can't do them because my G15 v2 wont work until windows begins to load. Gets a ps2 keyboard, still cant boot from disc as it says boot from disc, then underneath the BootMGR is compressed, control alt delete to restart stuff...

So, what do I do? Can't boot my pc at all, got no spare HDD, could I run ubuntu Live with my HDD disconnected, then plug it back in and somehow fix it or am I best getting a new hard drive or what?

    Thanks,

    Peter.

I'd guess you're looking at reinstalling Windows to be honest. With disk space so cheap and the problems with compressed disks I see no reason to use compression of the disk.

I don't know why I did tbh, I've got a 160GB hard drive, and got 130GB free anyway... I'd love to just reinstall windows now, but how, when I can't boot from disk?

surely you can just stick the installation disk in and then it'll recognise it, then ask you to press a key to boot from it?
just use the PS2 keyboard you mentioned to make it boot

if i was you, i'd use the 'full format' function aswell.. not the '(quick)' one. then you get a completely 0d HD

Unless I'm much mistaken the only thing a full format does above the quick one is check the disk. If there's no reason to suspect the disk's integrity then there's no need for a full format.

i always though that the full format option made the drive a bit quicker than if it was half used?
    maybe not. :\

Nope, just delays your Windows install by a bit

Peter just put your bootable CD in, it'll recognize the disk and just format it. Only problem is you'd probably lose your files and settings/setup. A reminder to always back up

Re: BootMGR is compressed - ctrl alt del to restart

Right, booted from an old nlited CD, only one i had, and began to select partion etc.. and it failed with some error.

Now installing ubuntu using the whole hard drive not a partion, so hopefully this will let me boot from the windows disk, if not then, erm, i dunno really...

    EDIT:

Installed ubuntu, then booted from the nlited xp cd again and its 14% through a long format and doing fine so far, once i've installed xp i'm gonna install vista again I think i've sorted it.

    Learnt my lesson now though!
